॥ माङ्गल्यस्तवः ॥
This stotram consists of fifty verses and forms the 43rd chapter of
Sri Vishnudharmottara samhita. This is structured in the form of the
answer given by sage Pulastya in reply to a question by sage Dhalbya.
The first two verses form Dhalbya's question and what follows form
Pulastya's answer. Verses 3 and 4 state the benefits of thinking
about the Lord and glory of this stotra. The next eight verses sing
the glory of the Lord. They say that He is the creator of the
universe: He gives liberation to His devotees and there is none to
equal or excel Him. The next eight verses (No.13 to 20) praise the
Lord who took the form of a boar. Verses No.21 to 28 are in praise of
Lord Narasimha.Verses No.29 to 35 are in praise of Lord Vamana - in
His dwarfish form and are followed by one verse each about Hayagriva,
Parasurama, Rama and Krishna. Then follow a verse on the fom of the
Lord to be meditated upon in the morning hours, a verse on His form
for meditation during the noon, a verse for meditation in the
afternoon and one verse for meditation at all times. These are
followed by two verses that give the palasruti or benefit of reciting
this stotra . The next two verses contain an assurance that by
worshipping the Lord one can get all his wishes fulfilled. The next
verse No.47 cites some instances from the puranas to substantiate the
statement. The last three verses mention the greatness of this
stotram.
Great acharyas like Sri Parasara Bhattar and Sri Vedanta Desika had
quoted from this stotram. This fact attests the greatness of the
stotram and lends authrity to it. Devotees may, therefore include
this stotram along with other verses in their daily prayer.

Mangalya Sthavam
(Prayer for good happenings)
By
Sage Pulasthya
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Mangalya sthavam is a great prayer addressed to several avatharas of Lord Vishnu occurring in the forty third chapter of the “Vishnu Dharmotharam Ithihasam.”. It is a conversation between Sage Pulasthya and his disciple sage Dhaulabhya. On being asked about the most suitable prayer to drive away bad dreams and for being able to complete all jobs in a proper fashion by Dhaulabhya, Pulasthya tells him that only a prayer to Lord Vishnu would help him achieve that, and he also teaches the prayer to him.
This prayer has been very popular with great Vaishnavite Acharyas like Vedantha Desigar and Parasara Bhattar. This is also recited by devotees before starting any important work. What follows is a simple translation. People interested in reading the great prayer in Deva Nagari along with very detailed commentary as well as see wonderful pictures of Lord Hari are requested to visit www.sundarasimham.org/ebooks/ebook65.htm)
Sage Dhaulabhya asks:
Karyarambeshu sarveshu, duswapneshu
cha sathama,
Amangalyeshu drushteshu ya
japthavyam thaduchatham. 1
Which is the most proper to be chanted,
During the beginning of any job,
Or when we are flustered by bad dreams,
Or when we see bad things happening?
Yenarambascha siddhyanthi

Amangalanam drushtanam pariharscha
jayathe. 2
How do we make Jobs begun to end well,
Bad effects not happening because of bad dreams,
And bad effects seen are properly compensated?
