MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1182

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1182
Radhe krishna,
Have a Blessed day,

CONTINENCE

Swami Sivananda
The vital energy is conserved and transformed into mighty spiritual energy by the practice of continence. This powerful spiritual energy feeds the intense flame of meditation practised by the aspirant. Continence aims and achieves the refinement of the physical, vital energy and its sublimation into spiritual power. Celibacy or continence is not a matter of repression or supression, but is a positive dynamic convertive process. It is the process of controlling the sex-energy, conserving it and then diverting it into higher channels, and finally converting it into spiritual energy.

n this very time of existence, seek the Eternal. Unfold the divine perfection within you. This is the serious business of life. All other things are secondary. Give top priority to this.

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1181

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

CONTINENCE

Swami Sivananda
Continence or celibacy, which is, in its dynamic aspect, called purity, constitutes perfect self-control; absence of greed, lust and anger; equality, peace and harmony. Continence or celibacy is not mere bachelorhood. Spiritual practices require tremendous energy and nerve power. This energy is acquired through the earnest practice of continence or conservation of vital fluid. Warfare with the turbulent senses and the treacherous mind can be successfully carried on only with the strength and power born of perfect continence.

Death is not the end and birth is not the beginning. Death knows no time, nor respects rank or position.

- Swami Sivananda
What Is Mind
The vast number of people know only that mind is thought. Mind is something with which
we think. It is not so easy like that. Even if you do not want to think, the mind will simply think. It
thinks of objects. It was a very hot and sultry day in the school. Suddenly a boy got tired and he got
bored, and he gave a piercing whistle. When the teacher questioned him why he did it, the boy
replied, “I did not whistle. It whistled itself.” Similarly the mind is thinking its own thoughts every
minute. As long as the mind is producing thoughts, the mind cannot concentrate. You have to divert
it to God. But how to do it? Why does the mind wander about? All these an aspirant has to
understand. A Karma Yogin has to understand it, a Jnana Yogin has to understand it, a Bhakti Yogin
has to understand it.
You have to understand it whether you are alone or amidst people. On the other hand, when
you are alone, mind gets an opportunity to have its full play. What is this mysterious thing which is
such a problem for the Sadhaka, without which he cannot do Sadhana but which, if not managed,
pulls him down? How does the mind work? If we could have a basic knowledge of its nature, then
we can hope of devising some means of gaining control over it.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1180

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1180

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

NON-INJURY

Swami Sivananda
Non-injury, of course, implies non-killing. It is development of the mental attitude in which hatred is replaced by love. Non-injury needs a harmless mind, mouth and hand. Non-injury is not merely non-killing, but in its comprehensive meaning means entire abstinence from causing pain or harm whatsoever to any living creature, either by thought, word or deed. Perfection in practice of this great virtue is not possible without the perfect practice of truth and continence. Mercy, control of anger, freedom from malice and pride, restraint of senses help the practice of non-injury.
Swami Chidananda

The highest fulfilment is the result of the highest renunciation. The less you want, the more you get. He who wants nothing from the world finds the world falling at his feet. Even the gods are afraid of him who wants nothing for himself.

Radhe krishna,

NON-INJURY

Swami Sivananda
So let us, for all creatures, great or small, develop such a boundless heart and mind. Aye, let us practise love for all the world. Goutama Buddha. Thou shalt not kill. —Jesus Christ. He who saveth a life, shall be as though he hath saved all mankind alive. —Mohammed {Koran, V7-38). A man should prefer good to harm, good deeds to sins, virtue to vice, light to darkness —Zoroaster. One Self dwells in all. All are manifestation of the One God. By injuring another, you but injure your own self. By serving another, you serve your own self. Love all. Serve all. Hate none. Insult none. Injure none in thought, word and deed. Non-injury is the supreme Law of life.

I am a ray of that great Light of lights. I am a wave on the great ocean of Eternal Existence. I am the child of the Divine. This recognition of your relationship with God is a tremendous treasure, a wealth to which nothing on earth can compare.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1178

Radhe krishna,

PRACTICE OF TRUTH

Swami Sivananda
Write in bold types the words "SPEAK TRUTH" on card boards and hang them in different places in your house. This will caution you when you are about to speak a lie. You will then check yourself at once. A time will come when you will be established in the habit of speaking truth. Punish yourself by fasting if you tell a lie and record the lies in a diary. Gradually the number of lies will decrease and you will become a truthful man. Stick to the path of truth at all costs. Truth has a lustre of its own. It shines for itself and sheds its light on others. When you stick to truth as your only religion, when you strictly adhere to truth alone at all times, at all places and on all occasions, you cannot afford to harm anyone. Perfect peace and real happiness will be yours.

Dharma is righteousness. Artha is lawful acquisition of wealth. Kama is enjoyment of unforbidden pleasures. Moksha is emancipation from worldly bondage, or the attainment of immortality, freedom and perennial bliss.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1177

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

VIOLATION OF ETHICAL CODE

Swami Sivananda
Inability to control the craving for sense-enjoyment results in breach of the virtue of non-stealing. The real cause of theft is too many desires and cravings and undisciplined senses. When the senses are powerful and the uncontrolled mind wants things, then the pilfering nature enters the mind. Desire and craving blind the ethical sense and blunt the conscience. To abstain from any kind of theft, you must curb your desires, discipline the senses and control the mind.

It is extremely difficult to have a calm and pure mind. But you must have such a mind, if you want to have progress in meditation, if you desire to do Nishkamya Karma Yoga. This is one of the most important qualifications for the aspirant.

- Swami Sivananda
Shave Vasanas
That is why Swamiji says, you have to shave the Vasanas, not merely the head. The
Avadhoota had taken his own mind and Vasanas. He had the sense of mineness. This feeling itself is
the jugglery of the mind. In Hinduism, everything is Brahman Himself—“Sarvam Khalvidam
Brahma.” There is no devil. In all other religions there is a God and there is a devil. Satan is there in
Christianity; Arhiman is there in Parsi’s religion, but in Hinduism, everything is Brahman. Then
where is the devil? It is in the mind only. Therefore, whether you live in Uttarkashi or in Bombay,
you cannot escape your senses and mind, and as long as you do not know how to deal with them,
how to manage them, they will continue to manage you and deal with you in a summary manner,
and what will happen to you ultimately? Your Virakti and all those things will go away. Unless one
delves within and tries to understand the inner machinery, one cannot practise Sadhana
successfully. The inner machinery will follow you wherever you go. You cannot leave it in Bombay
and come and work here; but even then, without mind you cannot think of God; without it you
cannot concentrate and meditate; without it there is no Smarana and Dhyana. Without mind and
emotions, thoughts and feelings, you cannot have Bhava, Bhakti. Therefore, the mind is the
instrument. It is necessary, and at the same time if it is not properly understood and managed, it
becomes your own undoer. Therefore, it is a necessary evil which has to be turned into a boon. How
to purify the Asuddha Manas—the impure mind? Give it battle, punish it, chastise it, purify it and
convert it into Suddha Manas so that it becomes your friend—this is also no less a part of Yoga than
Kirtan, Japa and the like. Every aspirant has to use his intelligence and has to manage the important
task of dealing with senses and the mind. You can manage an unruly thing only if you understand it.
Unless he who drives the horse, knows its habits, he cannot manage it. Therefore, this is a very
important part of Sadhana.

PRACTICE OF TRUTH

Swami Sivananda
Scriptures emphatically declare: "Speak the truth. Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood. " God is Truth and Truth must be realized by speaking truth. A truthful man is absolutely free from worries and anxieties. He has a calm mind. If one observes speaking truth for twelve years one will get "Perfection of Speech. " Then whatever one speaks will come to pass. There will be power in the speech of such a person. Your thoughts should agree with your words, and the words should agree with your actions. In the world people think of one thing, say another thing and do another thing. This is horrible, this is nothing but crookedness, and you must carefully watch your thoughts, words and actions.

Man can raise himself to the highest Heaven or damn himself to the lowest hell. It is all in his hands.

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1175

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

TRUTHFULNESS

Swami Sivananda
Hypocritical conduct, receiving bribes and rumour-mongering are gross breaches of right conduct. Have daily introspection and self-analysis. Find out the falsehood and eliminate it. Truth is to the spiritual aspirant what strength is to the strong man. Truth is the great armour to protect you against the temptations of this world of senses and their objects. If you are established in truth, whatever you utter will turn out unfailingly to be true.

Distinction or separateness should not cloud your vision. You should be broad-minded and practise equality or unity which is eternal.

- Swami Sivananda
Two Viraktas
There is a fine story which Sri Gurudev once told. There were two Avadhootas. They were
Maha Viraktas (great detachment). They used to live with only a Kaupeena. In winter they used to
spread straw and sleep, and both of them used to have straw. It is difficult to get sunlight in
Uttarkashi, and wherever the sun comes, they take the grass-bed and put it in the sun so that it may
get a little warm. One Avadhoota was drying his grass-bed while the other Avadhoota, who was
returning from Kshetra in his own inner thoughts, trod upon that grass-bed. Immediately the first
Avadhoota got wild and shouted, “Can’t you see this straw, put for drying?” The idea of mineness
cropped up and they began to abuse each other. It is not a mere piece of imagination, Kalpana, but it
is an actual incident which took place in Uttarkashi.

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1174

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

TRUTHFULNESS

Swami Sivananda
Never swerve from truth. Have no compromise with half-truth. Many forms of satisfaction and so-called harmless untruths have become part and parcel of present-day social life. Flattery is a form of untruth. You do not mean what you utter, but shamelessly utter it just to obtain some favour of the other person. Exaggeration is another form of falsehood. You indulge in exaggeration just to create sensation and gain importance. Duplicity is another despicable sin against truth.
Mind Makes Heaven And Hell
Whatever you are, you cannot run away from yourself. If you think that family bondage is a
great obstacle for living a life of Nivritti, you can shake off family. You can run away from your
home or city. All right. You can become an Avadhoota (naked Sadhu). You can take off pant and
coat, and wear only a Kaupeena. If you think that the company of men is not congenial, you can
renounce their company. In fact, many people come here on account of bad company obtaining in
the towns, but here also they complain of bad company. If you do not want to prepare roti, you have
to stand before someone who prepares roti. All right, you go away from family, from things and
from company of people, but the peculiar thing is that you cannot run away from yourself, and what
does it mean? You have to take your tongue, you have to take all the senses with you, and together
with your senses you have to take the habits to which the senses are slaves. If you are a tobacco
addict, then you will feel the tobacco call even if you go to Uttarkashi and thus you take all the
senses with you. You take all your habits and idiosyncrasies wherever you go and you take your
mind with you, With its Raga-Dvesha, love and hatred.
Swami Chidananda

Sadhana is not any kind of bodily action that is outwardly directed, but is rather a state of mind, a condition of thinking, a consciousness in which one lives.

CENTRAL PRINCIPLES OF MORAL LIFE

Swami Sivananda
The three great Laws of Righteous Life are the Law of Satya or truthfulness, the Law of Ahimsa or non-injury, and the Law of Brahmacharya or continence, or purity. From the practice of these three virtues accrue all the other virtues. If you wish to attain supreme happiness, peace and lasting freedom, give up causing injury to any being, give up untruth and lust. Practise harmlessness, truthfulness, purity and chastity. He who causes pain will reap sorrow in return. Never hurt any living being even in your thought.

You are deathless Spirit indwelling the body, untouched and totally unaffected even by its dissolution. Whether you are in the body or without the body, your glorious and immutable nature is forever the same.

The Dharmakshetra
What are the things we have to understand? Plainly we have to understand facts about Yoga
and Vedanta because these are the ways through which we have to lead our divine life and approach
Divinity and attain bliss. But then what do we mean by Yoga and Vedanta and all such internal
sciences? Where are they? Are they only in the books or are they in particular places like the
Himalayas or Uttarkashi or Mecca or anywhere? Supposing they are there, the next question arises
whether they are only there and nowhere else, or the more important, is it necessary for us to find
their location elsewhere also? They are in the books in one aspect and in some aspect they are in
places like Rishikesh or Mecca. There is a meaning in going to such sacred places, because the
people who lived there have lived their life practically, and they have left the stamp of their life in
the very ether of those places. The whole atmosphere is pervaded by the spirit of Yoga and Vedanta,
and therefore, when you live there, it evokes in you the similar spirit. But the most important place
where all divine life, all Yoga and Vedanta, is to be practised, is the Dharmakshetra which
constitutes of the mind and the heart of man. Divine life has to be lived in the mind and in the heart.
Yoga has to be achieved here (in the heart). Vedanta has to be achieved here, and if it is not here, it
will not be found anywhere else. Vedanta and Yoga have to come from the heart and mind. How are
you to demonstrate your Jnana, Bhakti, selfless service, Yoga? You have to manifest them through
the thoughts that you think, through the words that you utter, and through the actions that you do.
All the scriptures of the world will be of no avail unless you begin to manifest them through your
personal being. Sadhana, Vedanta, Yoga, the whole thing has to be lived here. The most important
locality for all Yoga, Vedanta and divine life is within the man, and therefore one must understand
oneself. One must first of all understand this mysterious Dharmakshetra where all these things have
to be worked out. Then only one will be able to set about in a proper way on the path of Yoga,
Vedanta and divine life.
