Meaning:
3.1: Who can become Satisfied after listening to the Glory of the Devi, once his Mind become Pure?
(i.e. more one listens, more one wants to listen)
3.2: Each Step of the Story gives the Undecaying Fruit of Ashwamedha Yajna.

Vyasa said:

4.1: O King, Listen to the Auspicious Story I am telling, about the origin of the name Shatakshi,
4.2: There is nothing to withhold from you; there is nothing which cannot be made known to a Devi Bhakta (Devotee) like you.

5 & 6. Once there was a great demon known as Durgama who was very wicked

हिरण्याक्षान्वये जातो रुरुपुत्रो महाखलः ॥५॥
देवानां तु बलं वेदो नाशे सुरा अपि
नक्ष्यंत्येव सन्देहो विधेयं तावदेव तत् ॥६॥
Durgama-[A]akhyo Mahaa-Daityah Puurvam Parama-Daarunnah |
Hirannyaakssa-Anvaye Jaato Ruru-Putro Mahaa-Khalah ||5||
Devaanaam Tu Balam Vedo Naashe Suraa Api |
Nakssyam-Ty-Eva Na Sandeho Vidheyam Taavad-Eva Tat ||6||

Meaning:
5.1: Long ago there was a Great Daitya (Demon) known as Durgama, who became very Powerful and Dreadful,
5.2: He was Born in the Lineage of Hiranyaksha and was the Son of Ruru; he was very Wicked,
6.1: He thought: The Power of Devas is because of the Vedas, whose destruction is indeed the destruction of the Devas,
6.2: By Attaining that (i.e. the Vedas) will indeed make me like them (i.e. the Devas); there is no doubt in this.

7 & 8. To get the Vedas, he did penance in the Himalayas and meditated on Sri Brahma for thousand years

Tejasaa Tasya Lokaas-Tu Samtaptaah Sa-Sura-Asuraah ||8||

Meaning:
7.1: Reflecting thus, he went to the Himalayas for performing Tapas,
7.2: Meditating on Sri Brahma in his mind, he continued his meditation by intaking air only,
8.1: For Thousand years he performed Intense Tapas (Penance).
8.2: The Energy that emanated from his Tapas greatly Heated the Worlds of both the Devas and the Asuras (Demons).

Meaning:
9.1: Pleased with his Tapas, the Four-Faced Bhagavan (i.e. Sri Brahma) mounted on His Swan, ...
9.2:... and with a Gracious Countenance like a Lotus came to him to grant Boon,
10.1: The Four-Faced Lord gently opened His Eyes and casted His glance on the Asura whose Eyes were closed in meditation,
10.2: Sri Brahma said: Choose a Boon, let all be Auspicious with you; Speak out the wish which is there in your mind.

Meaning:
11.1: Sri Brahma said: I am Pleased with your unparalled Tapas (Penance) and have come to grant you Boon,
11.2: Hearing these words from the mouth of Sri Brahma, the asura rose from his samadhi (meditation),
12.1: After worshipping Sri Brahma, he asked for the Boon: "Please give me the Vedas, O Sureswara",
12.2: "Give me all the Vedic Mantras in the Three Worlds which are with the Brahmins and the Devas.

13 & 14. Durgama also asked for great strength to defeat the Devas; Sri Brahma granted the boons

Meaning:
13.1: "Let all of them (i.e. the Vedas) exist in my presence (i.e. with me only), O Maheswara", ...
13.2: ... "and give me such Strength by which I may be able to Defeat the Devas",
14.1: Thus hearing the words of the asura and saying ""Tathastu" (Let it Be so) ...
14.2: ... the Four-Faced great Lord of the Vedas went back to Satya Loka (the abode of Sri Brahma).

15 & 16. From that time the Brahmins forgot the Vedas and all sacrificial oblations stopped

Meaning:
15.1: From that time onwards, the Brahmins forgot the Vedas, ...
15.2: ... and consequently Ablutions, Sandhya Vandanams, regular Homas (sacrificial oblations), Sraddha ceremonies (the rites of the deceased), Yajnas (Sacrifices, Oblations), Japas (repetitions of God's name) etc ...
16.1: ... disappeared from the surface of the Earth, and the earth became filled with great Cries,
16.2: "How has this happenned?", "How has this happenned?", said the Brahmins among each other.

17 & 18. Without their part of havis from sacrificial oblations the Devas became weak; the asuras attacked

Meaning:
17.1: The Brahmins said: "Due to the absence of the Vedas, how are we to discharge our Highest Duties?"
17.2: Thus on the Earth, when a Great Calamity arose which was exceedingly Harsh, ...
18.1: ... when the Devas who are Nirjara (i.e who do not become old, signifying immortal) became like old (i.e got weakened) due to the absence of their part of Havis (i.e. sacrificial oblations allotted to them), ...
18.2: ... then, the Daityas (Demons) attacked the City of Amaravati (the capital of Swarga Loka or Heaven).

19 & 20. The Devas bereft of strength were defeated; they fled and hid in remote mountain caves

Meaning:
19.1: The Devas who were bereft of Strength by It (i.e. by absence of Havis), were unable to fight against the Asuras whose bodies were strong like Thunderbolts,
19.2: They (the Nirjara Devas) fled being driven out from the city, ...
20.1: ... and took Shelter in the Mountain Caves of Mount Meru which are difficult of access ...
20.2: ... and Abiding there Meditated on the Highest Shakti, the Parambika (the Supreme Mother).

21 & 22. Without sacrificial oblations there were no rains and a great draught ensued

21.2: Due to the absence of Rains, the Earth became completely dried up and waterless,
22.1: The Wells, Ponds, Tanks and Rivers became Dry,
22.2: The Lack of Rains (i.e. Draught), O King, which existed for Hundred Years, ...

23 & 24. Many people and animals died; the Brahmins left for Himalayas to meditate on the Divine Mother

Meaning:
23.1: ... led to the Death of many People and lot of Cows, Buffaloes and other animals,
23.2: In all the Houses, the Dead Bodies of People got accumulated, as there did not exist anyone to perform the final rites,
24.1: In this Calamity, the Brahmins who indeed are born with Traquil Minds,...
24.2: ... went near the Himalaya mountains and attempted to propitiate the Shivaa (i.e. the Auspicious Mother who is the consort of Shiva)

25 & 26. The Brahmins meditated and worshipped without taking any food; they cried "Have mercy on us O Mother"

Meaning:
25.1: By Meditation and Worship they tried to please the Devi day after day,
25.2: By Fasting and Zealously pursuing their practices, they took Refuge in the Devi,
26.1: They prayed: "O Maheshani, have Mercy on us, the People who are lowly",
26.2: "Even with all our Faults, it is not praise-worthy for You, O Mother to hold Your Grace".

27 & 28. The Brahmins cried: "Remove Your anger O Mother, there is no other refuge for us"

Meaning:
27.1: "Remove Your Anger, O Deveshi (the Lord of Gods), You are present as Antaryami (knower and regulator of our inner feelings) of everyone",
27.2: "In what manner you Impel, in that manner People Act",
28.1: "There is no other Refuge for us, for we people; what are You looking again and again?"
28.2: "You have the Power to do whatever You wish, O Maheswari."

29 & 30. The Brahmins prayed: "Save us O Mother, from this great calamity, You are the Lord of innumerable universes"

30.2: "We Salute You again and again, You Who are the Lord of innumerable Millions of Universes."

31.2: Salutations to You, Who is Known through Vedanta, Salutations, Salutations to You, Who is Bhuvaneshwari (the Goddess of the Universe),
32.1: Salutations to You, Who is made Known by all the Agamas with the word expressions of Neti Neti (Not this, Not this),
32.2: O Devi, You are the Cause behind Everything, all Bhavas (devotional feelings) Bow down to You.

Meaning:
75.1: Then the Devi, Graciously Pleased, brought back the Vedas and gave it to them,
75.2: She then, the Cuckoo-voiced one, specially addressed the Brahmins,
76.1: The Vedas are like the Superior parts of My Body, so take Special Care of them,
76.2: Without Her (i.e. the Vedas), what Calamity can arise, you have seen just now.

Patthaniiyam Mamai[a-E]taddhi Maahaatmyam Sarvado[a-U]ttamam |
Tena Tussttaa Bhavissyaami Harissyaami Tatha-Apada ||78||

Meaning:
77.1: Worship Me always, and Serve Me always, all of You in this manner,
77.2: There is nothing greater in bestowing Good Fortune than this Instruction,
78.1: Read this, My Mahatmyam, always, which is most Excellent,
78.2: By It, I will become Pleased and Manifest and take away your Misfortunes in this manner.

Meaning:
79.1: He Who takes My Name "Durga", which is given because I slayed Asura Durgama, ...
79.2: ... and My Name "Shatakshi", which is given because I manifested Hundred Eyes, will Pierce through My Maya, and Walk Free,
80.1: With what utterances can I Speak about the Real Essence (of Me) behind the Multiplicity, ...
80.2: ... (Know that) I am the only God (being the essence underlying everything) Who is always Worshipped by the Suras (Devas) and the Asuras (Demons).

81.2: ... filling the Hearts of the Jana (People) with great Joy and Contentment; She Herself being the Embodiment of Sat-Cit-Ananda (Existence-Consciousness-Bliss),
82.1: This Great Supreme Secret I told you fully, O king,
82.2: Please keep this Secret, this great Story which is the source of All Auspiciousness.

83.2: ... will Attain all according to his wishes and finally be Blissful in the Devi Loka (the World of the Devi).
