Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja




Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major festivals of the Hindus. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It falls on the Shukla Chaturthi during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. The festival is  celebrated on29th of august. this year.
The Ganeshotsav, the festivity of Ganesh Chaturthi, ends after 10 days on Anant Chaturdashi which is also known as Ganesh Visarjan day. On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in water body after a gala street procession. (8th sept.2014)

How to Perform Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja



Here are the steps to perform the Ganesh pooja at your home.

1. Take your bath and keep the idol of Lord Ganesha on an altar.?

2. Fold your hand in namaste and chant the ‘Om' at least thrice with your eyes closed.

3. Chant the following Ganesh mantra:

Vakratunda mahaakaaya soorya koti samaprabha
Nirvighnam kuru mein deva sarva kaaryashu sarvadaa

4. After you place the mukut on the idol, recite the mantra as given below, and ring the bell for 5 seconds:

Asmin bimbe chitrapate
Maha-Ganapataye namah
Vastrartha mukutam
Samarpayami

5. Then you should pray to Lord Ganesha and invoke the almighty into the idol. This is called the pran-prathista. The pran-prathista mantras are available in the Rig Veda. One such mantra for the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja is given below:

Ganananh tva ganapatim havamahe kavim kavinam - upamashravastamam | Jyeshhtharajam brahmanan.h brahmanaspata A nah shrivnvannutibhih sida sadanam || (Rig Veda 2.23.1)

In English, this mantra means:

We invoke You, O Ganapati of the ganas (Lord Shiva attendants), Who are Brahmana-spati of the brahmas (prayers), the wisest among the wise, Who abound in treasure beyond all measure, the most brilliant one. Do listen to our prayers, come with Your blessings and assurances of protection into our home, and be seated.

Another pran-prathista mantra is mentioned here:

Ni shhu sida ganapate ganeshhu tvamahurvipratamam kavinam | Na rite tvat.h kriyate kinchanare mahamarkam maghavan.h chitramarcha || (Rig Veda 10.112.9) In English, this mantra means:

Sit down among the worshippers, O Ganapati, the best sage among the sages. Without You nothing can be done here or far. Accept with honor, O wealthy One, our great and variegated hymns of praise.

6. Once you invoke the soul of Lord Ganesha into the idol, it's time for you to start the other rituals and customs of Ganesh Chaturthi pooja. You should begin with the Saraswati mantra:

Saraswati namastubhyam varade kaama roopinee
Poojaarambham karishyaami siddhir bhavatu mein sadaa

The translation of this mantra in English is given below:

Goddess Saraswati, I offer my salutations to you. I am about to begin the puja, kindly bless me with knowledge.

7. Before you start the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja, here's the mantra you should now chant:

Mama upaatta samasta durita kshaya dwaaraa parameshwara preeti
Artham mahaa ganapati poojaam karishye

8. Next, you should prepare the items you need for the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja. The items required are:

  • Coconut
  • 21 Modak (favorite food of Lord Ganesha)
  • Betel leaf and betel nut
  • 21 blades of Dhruva grass
  • Pack of incense sticks
  • Stick of Sandalwood to create sandalwood paste
  • Red and black powders used to apply the tilak on one's forehead)
  • Camphor
  • Gulal (Red powder used for applying tilak)
  • Pouch of dhoop (natural extract from trees)
  • Janahav (a cotton string worn by the Hindus)
  • Cotton packet which can be used to create cotton wicks
9. Offer your prayers to the Lord. The mantra you should chant now is:

Gurur brahma guruvishnuh gurudevo maheshwara
Gurussakshaat parabrahma tasmai shri gurave namah

The above mantra means:

The teacher is the embodiment of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. I salute that Guru, who is the God himself.

10. Have a ghee lamp and make a cotton wick. Start meditating by chanting the following words for Ganesh Chaturthi pooja.(GHEE DEEP)
Shuklaambara dharam vishnum shashi varnam chaturbhujam
Prasanna vadanam dhyaayet sarvavighnopa shaantaye

The above words mean:

I meditate and pray to Lord Ganesha, who has put on bright clothes and has four arms. The pleasant-faced Lord will remove all obstacles that come your way.

11. Put garlands of flowers around the Lord's neck.

12. Chant the following mantra to invite the Lord to accept your pooja. Offer camphor aarti and water to the Lord.

Asmin bimbe chitrapate
Maha-ganapataye namah
Karpura nirajanam
Darsayami
Nirajananantaram
Acamaniyam samarpayami

13. Now it's time to welcome Lord Ganesha with flowers and a copper pot (or kalash) full of water.

14. Offer milk, honey, and curd to the Lord. Other offerings required for Ganesh Chaturthi pooja are ghee and sugar.

15. Pour the above offerings and water into the Charanamrit set.

16. Dip some flowers into the pot and offer them to your Lord.

17. Conduct the pooja by applying sindoor (kumkum), turmeric powder (haldi), sandalwood paste, and black powder (abir).

18. Now, you need to perform aarti with a brass lamp and incense sticks while circling the deity at least thrice in the clockwise direction.

19. Continue the aarti with a Niranjan lamp. Light the oil cotton wicks of the Niranjan lamp. This is an essential part of the traditional Ganesh Chaturthi pooja.

21. Once the aarti for the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja is over, stand straight and fold your hands in namaste. Then turn clockwise thrice to offer your prayers to the Lord.

22. Aside from the aarti, you can perform the shhodashopachara which include 16 forms of paying tribute to the Lord.

23. After the aarti and shhodashopachara are over, you should distribute the prasad among the devotees and recite the 108 salutations dedicated to the Lord. Request the Lord to offer his blessings to one and all.

24. You should now recite the shanti mantra as given below:

Sarve santu niramayah
Sarve bhadrani pashyantu
Maa kashchid sukhabhag bhavet
