Purity of food brings purity of mind. Mind is the subtlest essence of food. Food has a very close connection with the practice of Brahmacharya (celibacy). An aspirant should be careful in the selection of diet in the beginning of his spiritual life. Later on, drastic dietetic restrictions can be removed. Take wholesome, Sattwic (pure) food, half a stomach-full. The food must be simple, bland, spice-less, nonirritating and non-stimulating. Stuffing up the stomach is highly deleterious. You should take food only when you are hungry. Highly seasoned dishes, hot curries and spices, meat, fish, tamarind, mustard, onion, garlic, asafoetida, pickles, things fried in oil, pastry preparations, eggs, tobacco, alcohol, tea, coffee and narcotic drugs —all these are not advisable for the whole-time spiritual aspirants.

Forgive those who slander or speak ill of you. Do not harm anyone who injures you. If anybody from aversion speaks disparagingly of you, greet him courteously without minding those disagreeable words. - Swami Sivananda Kindly do Ananya Chintana (constant remembrance) of the Lord. None can explain the immense benefits of Japa. Japa is the rod in the hand of the blind aspirant to plod on the road to realisation, Japa is the philosopher’s stone or divine elixir that makes him God-like. Conscious attempt to merge ourselves in the Supreme Reality is called spiritual Sadhana, which should be a common aim of all life, though the processes could be different.

What is needed is proper education of the followers of all religions. Place the practical tenets of your own religion before the followers of that religion, and devise ways and means of enabling them to express these tenets in their daily life. Without practice, idealism creates fatalism in man. Unless knowledge alters one's life, it is useless. Selflessness and love are not creeds to be taught, but ideals to be exemplified, demonstrated, and radiated. Therefore, let everyone practice his own religion and strive to attain the goal. Let religion create saints and Yogins, rather than Mandirs, Masjids, and churches

Man forgets all about his religion on account of ignorance, or lust for power and greed. He has become irreligious. So he has come down to the level of a brute. He has lost all sense of morality. He does havoc. He creates mischief. He stabs, loots, and burns houses. The law of the jungle prevails. Many preach Buddhism, but no one gives up desires and Himsa. Many preach Christianity, but no one practises love and forgiveness. Many preach Islam, but no one recognises the brotherhood of man. Many preach Hinduism, but no one realises the Divinity in all. Preaching has become the livelihood of men, while practice has become their object of scorn.

Constant remembrance of the Lord will bring you everlasting happiness and Supreme Peace. Let thy every movement be a living prayer to the Lord. Think positively. You grow into a likeness of the thought picture which you hold on to with sincerity and persistence. Contemplate upon your ideal in which you wish to grow. When Japa of any Mantra is done with intensity, it sets up spiritual vibrations which transform the subconscious mind and make it strong enough to resist evil tendencies or Vasanas. Chant the name of the Lord. Sing His glory. Meditate on His divine attributes. He who repeats Lord's name with faith devotion and one-pointed mind, will conquer the mind in the end. God's name is like a lamp, kept on the doorway. It gives light both inside and outside the room. Even so, by keeping God's Name always on your tongue, you will have peace within and without. Just as fixe consumes the dross and releases pure gold from its impure one, so also does the Lord purify your heart, burn all the dross of your lower nature and release you as a pure soul.
