The selfless worker, who combines Jnana Yoga, thinks and feels that he is serving his own Self and realizes oneness of consciousness. The Yogi who combines devotion (Bhakti) in his action, thinks and feels that he is serving his Lord (his own deity) in all, and realizes God-consciousness, has the vision of God. Mere philanthropical work, done out of sympathy without devotion and knowledge, is nothing more than social scavengering. It is not Yoga or worship. It is good, no doubt. But it is on a lower plane. It cannot elevate a man much. The progress is dull and slow, if progress you call it. Remember, it is the mental attitude or feeling that does immense good.

A living God is in the form of a sick patient who is in a dying state. They have not got the heart to go and serve him or even to speak a few kind and encouraging words to him, when his life is ebbing away. How can they expect to have the vision of the all-merciful Lord when they have hearts made of flint? How can they hope to find God? How can they have God-realization when they have not got eyes to see God in all beings and the spirit of service to serve Him in all these forms? That man who has knowledge and devotion can alone do really efficient service to country and the people. Knowledge and devotion must be the rock-bottom basis of selfless service. Knowledge can be combined with selfless service, or devotion can be combined with selfless service, with much advantage. 

Do total surrender to the Lord. Keep back nothing, not even a little pride. Surrender yourself and your all unreservedly to the Lord. - Swami Sivananda Side by side with study of religious books and scriptures there should be daily Satsang at home. Set aside a part of the evening when all the family members can gather together, sing the Name of the Lord and commune with Him. SPIRIT OF SERVICE Swami Sivananda Spiritual aspirants of- the present-day are sadly lacking in these two indispensable qualifications, and that is the root-cause why they do not make any headway at all in their meditation. They have not prepared the ground, I mean the inner spirit, by protracted practice of love and service in the beginning. I have seen several devotees in all my experiences in the spiritual path—devotees who wear half a dozen rosaries around their necks and wrists and mutter the Lord's name day and night. But these devotees will never approach a sick man even while he is in a dying condition and give him a cup of water or milk and ask: "What do you want, brother? How can I serve you?" Out of curiosity they may just look at him from a distance. Can you call these people true devotees? Can there be an iota of real benefit in their meditation or remembrance of God or repeating His name?  Our Divine Master always said that the teaching profession is the noblest and best, for it gives you a grand opportunity of moulding young lives and turning their minds towards noble spiritual ideals. Therefore take to the profession with faith and enthusiasm and serve the Lord in your students. Kindly make a more thorough study of our Master’s works and equip yourself fully to discharge your sacred duty efficiently. You will shine and enrich the lives of your pupils. REAL SERVICE

Stopping of the breath by means of Pranayama for two or three hours, telling the rosary for six or eight hours, ability to sit in one Asana without stirring for more than three hours, cutting the frinum linguae and practising 'Khechari Mudra,' standing on one leg in the scorching heat of the summer sun, for many hours, doing Sirshasan for four hours at a stretch, living in solitary caves for years together, pining for the vision of God or chanting Om all the while—all these are of no avail unless one combines burning love for God who dwells in all beings and a fiery spirit of service in serving Him in all beings.

God is focusing upon you with all His love and grace, with this one view that He wants to make out of you the finest of human individuals on earth in this period.

ANGER

Too much loss of semen is the chief cause of irritability and anger. Passion is the root and anger the stem. You will have to destroy the root (passion) first. Then the stem (anger) will die by itself. A celibate who has preserved semen always keeps a balanced mind. He has a cool brain at all times. An aspirant should direct all his attention towards the conquest of this powerful enemy. Pure and light food, repetition of the Lord's name, regular meditation, prayer, company of the wise, selfless service, discrimination, dispassion, practice of control of breath and celibacy,—are some of the potent factors that pave a long way in eradicating this dire malady, anger.

All problems, as far as you are individually concerned, are self-wrought. If you are resolved within, then external problems lose their magnitude.

REAL SERVICE Swami Sivananda Who is a great man? Is it in a powerful king with an unbalanced and unbridled mind and living in a palace, or is it in a poor saint with a magnificent calm and balanced mind, living in a grass-hut on the sacred banks of the Ganges? If you want to serve another man, you should try to please him in all respects. You should not do him anything that pleases you. You should do such actions as can bring him immense happiness and good. This constitutes real service. But generally people under the camouflage of serving others try to please themselves only. This is a serious mistake. He who gives the handle of a sharp knife to another to hold, holding the sharp blade himself does real service. A real servant rejoices in suffering. He takes on his shoulders the most responsible, difficult and the most uninteresting type of work and kills his own little self so that he may be of service to others. He willingly undergoes pain and suffering in order to help and please others.  Why are you driven by greed? Why do you not seek freedom from the cycle of birth and death? Worldly possessions are of no avail. Death is sure to overtake you in your vain worldly pursuit. - Swami Sivananda  You are extremely blessed in your noble aspiration to tread the path of Divine Life. The Lord is all mercy and compassion and is sure to shower His Grace upon all who turn to Him for protection and care. Kindly trust in Him. Have no anxiety but surrender to the Lord under all circumstances and conditions. SENSE OF SEPARATENESS

The countenance of one who has this boundless love will shine with magnificent brilliance and lustre. There will be a glow of ineffable splendour. He who ignores his own pleasures and comforts and tries to help others always is really an advanced student in the path of spirituality. He carries with him the master-key to unlock the realms of spiritual bliss. You must be able to think quickly and act promptly with unerring precision and profound consideration in times of emergencies. You must take care to see that you are not rash and impetuous. You must be cool and collected.

Happiness results from good acts, pain from evil ones. Acts always bear fruit. Without
action no fruit arises. Virtuousness is a means of attaining the vision of God. Everything can be
attained by virtuousness.

The fact that we are able to know one another implies that we can psychologically come together. There would be no such thing as the concept of two unless there is the concept of the one already behind them.

SENSE OF SEPARATENESS

The sense of separateness is a fetter. Kill this sense of separateness by seeing God in every face, by developing oneness or unity of consciousness, and by selfless service. This sense of separateness is an illusion created by the ego which is born of ignorance. Develop keen enthusiasm for disinterested, selfless service. Be kind to all. Love all. Serve all. Be generous and tolerant towards all. Serve the Lord in all. That is the way to reach the goal, Selfrealization. The heart should be softened and in it should be developed boundless love for all beings. This is the first and foremost qualification for a spiritual aspirant. 

From time to time throughout the day, mentally offer yourself at the feet of God — "O Lord, I am Thine, all is Thine, whatever I do, all my acts, I offer at Thy feet. " Thus, everything becomes linked up with God and all activity becomes a Yogic process.

Balance of mind brings about real, lasting happiness to a self-disciplined man. It is not a commodity to be purchased in the market. It is, indeed, a rare commodity that is attained by protracted selfless service with equal vision, controlled senses and self-analysis, by developing virtues such as adaptability, broad and generous tolerance and a high degree of endurance, serenity, calmness, command of temper, etc., and by removing weaknesses, worries, fear and depression by self-enquiry, spiritual practices and meditation. It is serenity or balance of mind that can give real, lasting happiness to man. The wealth and the enjoyments in the entire world are nothing when compared to True worship consists in inward meditation alone, and in no outer form of worship. Therefore, apply your mind to the adoration of Atman, by meditating within yourself.

Selfless service means total self-abnegation. It is not merely service without remuneration. It is not merely doing some good to others just because there is the need for it. It means a total denial of the self,—a denial of being appreciated, of trying to appear good in the eyes of others, of trying to seek personal glory or feeling a sort of self-exhilaration in doing some good. It means not only some convenient form of service but the most exacting, menial type of work, if need be, which the mind generally refrains from doing.
