Swami SivanandaThe Sage is fully aware that the Atma always exists and the world is like a mirage. Through the eye of intuition he directly cognizes or realizes the Atma. Who is unmindful of his food, dress or habitation, and yet, who never transgresses moral laws, who is ever absorbed in Brahman, who has equal vision and balanced mind, is a Brahmana one rooted in Brahman. Sage knows that Knowledge of Atma alone is permanent and all other learning relating to this world is relative. A Sage knows that the knowledge which leads to the realization of Brahman bestows omniscience.
When a kerosene hurricane lamp is lit, the lamp frame is not the light, nor is the kerosene,
nor the glass chimney, nor the wick. In the centre of all this there is that principle which makes a
lamp a lamp, without which a lamp is not a lamp. That which gives light, which banishes darkness,
that alone is light. All other factors may be necessary for that light to shine, but all of them are
useless unless the flame burns within and the light radiates.
