ASANAS FOR MEDITATIONSwami SivanandaYogic Culture is divided into eight Angas (limbs or steps), viz., Yama, Niyama, Asan, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Yama is the practice of Ahimsa (non-killing or non-injuring), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), Aparigraha (abstinence from greed). Niyama is the practice of Saucha (internal and external purity), Santosh (contentment), Tapas (mortification), Swadhyaya (study of scriptures), Ishwarapranidhana (self-surrender). Asan is the third stage. If you want to enjoy the full spiritual benefits of Asans, you must first practise well the first two steps, Yama and Niyama. |
