VITAL FACTS ABOUT HEALTH Swami Sivananda Though man boasts himself to be civilized, yet when the question of food comes, he makes many unperceptible or open blunders. As a rule, every country has got its own dietetic routine, adjusted according to its climatic needs. The Indians should not discard their usual meal in the morning, say, between 10 and 11 a.m. A heavy lunch at noon in the tropical climate is not advisable. In the afternoon, instead of coffee or tea, one can have some fruits. The evening meal, taken between 7 and 8 p.m., should be light such as boiled vegetables, fruit, and a cup of milk. One should retire to bed by 10 p.m., and be ready to get up at 4 a.m. For the usual forenoon meal, one could take a little of starches, fats, green vegetables, proteins, milk or curd and fruit. Occasional fasts are more essential than occasional feasts to correct one's errors against natural life, which are often inevitable due to over-eating and eating too much of sweet and spiced foods. An occasional use of enema, or castor oil or any vegetable laxative, is necessary to clean the bowels. What you wish and long for with all your heart, that is yours. If you ask for Me, I am yours. - Swami Sivananda In order to root out these formidable enemies, man should cultivate purity, nobility, charity, love and a spirit of service in his heart. Remember; the Lord has created the world in order to provide a school in which man could learn these virtues and exercise them. A person who is endowed with good health is ever joyful and energetic, sleeps well, digests his food well, and does his work satisfactorily. A healthy boy shines well at the school and earns laurels. A healthy man is an asset to society, whom everyone else admires. Good health is not merely absence of disease. It includes a full development of the physical, moral, mental and spiritual powers and faculties in man. By possessing good health you raise the standard of public health. Public health is not the sole concern of the municipalities and health departments. Every citizen, every individual, is directly and intimately concerned with the preservation of the health and welfare, not only of himself, but of the society as a whole. Therefore, every individual should know well the science of hygiene and sanitati.

WHAT IS HEALTH Swami Sivananda Health is that state of equilibrium of the three humours of the body, namely, wind (Vayu), bile and phlegm, wherein the mind and all the organs of the body work in harmony and concord, and man enjoys perfect peace and happiness, sound sleep, and performs his duties of life with comfort and ease. It is that condition in which man can think properly, speak properly and act with alacrity, nimbleness and vigilance. It is that condition in which man has a calm mind, free movement of the bowels, healthful cheeks, shining face and sparkling eyes, good digestion, good appetite, normal breathing, good quantity and quality of blood, and strong nerves. It is that state which is coveted by all. A life of good health is a great blessing, indeed. Love is the supreme gift, the greatest thing in this world. TWENTY SAYINGS ON CELIBACY Swami Sivananda 19. Make the mind understand by repeated hammering and discrimination that all sexual pleasures are false, utterly worthless and extremely harmful. Clearly think over how very illusory and full of subsequent disillusionment it is. On no account should you listen to the promptings of the impure mind. Place before the mind the glory and advantage of a life in the eternal and blissful, omniscient Atman. 20. Lust deals a deadly blow to the spiritual calibre of man. Kill this lust by diverse methods. Do not entertain impure thoughts. Do not look at figures that create the mental sensation of passion. Avoid going to cinemas. Do not mix with all sorts of people, people who take pleasure in speaking of women, their character, love, nature, etc. Think of the Lord when the idea of sex enters the mind. Pray to Him fervently. Real peace can come only out of love and understanding. Man should love man; nation should understand another nation. Everybody should be filled with the spirit of self-sacrifice and selfless service. These qualities will manifest themselves in man if he is made to feel he is a spiritual soldier and that he is perpetually engaged in an inner war with the senses, with the mind, with egoism, in order to regain the Paradise lost. Ignorance is the common enemy. Egoism is the universal enemy. Lust, anger and greed are the worst enemies of all mankind. Selfishness is a powerful foe. 16. Celibacy does not mean to shut oneself out from the worldly temptation, but to sublimate and spiritualize the sex-energy, and to offer it as a pure and humble dedication to the service of God and man. 17. Lustful look, lustful thinking, wet-dreams, are all failures or breaks in celibacy. Be chaste in your look. Be chaste in your talk. Be chaste in your thought. See mother in all women. Cultivate sublime, divine thoughts. Repeat the Lord's name, and meditate regularly. You will be established in celibacy. 18. Those who practise celibacy should control the various forms of sexual impulse. The impulse of lustful look is a great menace, for it will stimulate curiosity and sexual desire. There is no harm in looking at a beautiful object. But you should be very strict to yourself. You will have to feel that everything is a manifestation of God. Lustful look tantamounts to adultery. Purify your thoughts and feelings. Purity is God. Thou art pure, in essence. Thou art an embodiment of purity. Repeat the formula mentally "I am purity, I am purity, " and attain that state of pristine, matchless purity.

14. If you want to practise celibacy, think and feel that your wife is your sister. Destroy the idea of husband and wife and develop the idea of brother and sister. You can develop pure and strong love by removing the impurity of lust. Make your wife a companion for spiritual quest. You should both be an inspiration to each other for spiritual attainments. Sit with her on holidays and read some religious books. Take her to places of pilgrimage. She will begin to take interest and delight in spiritual matters. Put this in practice, if you want to get rid of the miseries of the mundane life and enjoy the eternal bliss of the Soul. 15. Parents should not force marriage on their children. They should not stamp out the spiritual impressions in their children. 

Water has form. It is formless too in the form of vapour. Fire has form, and is formless too when it is hidden in the wood. So also, God has form. He is formless also.

TWENTY SAYINGS ON CELIBACY Swami Sivananda 1. Chastity or continence is an integral part of Yoga. It is an indispensable factor for the spiritual aspirants. You cannot attain great heights of spiritual consciousness without chastity. Chastity is the very heart of Yoga. 2. Chastity means, literally conduct that leads to the realization of Truth or one's own immortal Self. Its technical meaning is self-restraint; particularly, mastery or perfect control over the sexual organ or freedom from lust, in thought, word and deed. 3. Sexual cravings are more powerful than all other cravings. Therefore, you will have to direct all your efforts in controlling and sublimating the sexual cravings. 4. People are swayed by lust. They lose their sense of righteousness, and of time and place. They never discriminate between right and wrong. They lose all sense of shame.
