 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1202

Do good to him who hates you. Return good for evil. Do not return a blow by a blow, nor a curse by a curse. Shower blessings in return for blows and curses. Never do anything of which you will have occasion to repent. The act which does not do good to others, or that act of which one has to feel ashamed, should never be done. Shun these seven: anger, immorality, ignorance, conceit, aimlessness, covetousness and sloth. Develop these seven: faith, energy, strength of will-courage, patience, selflessness and insight. Purify, concentrate, meditate and realize, now and here. This is your foremost duty. All other duties are secondary. Non-injury, truthfulness, non-covetousness, purity and control of the senses are the common duties of all men.

Look at the stone-dog. The stone vanishes. Look at the stone, dog disappears. Even so, when you realize Brahman, the world and Maya vanish. When you look at the world, Brahman disappears.

The ideal of renunciation and detachment is the one factor that has kept intact the virility of
Bharatavarsha as a nation and race. Take any period in history and you will find that it is the greatest
personalities who have risen above all selfishness and ruthlessly renounced all petty attachments
that have achieved the greatest good of the country and turned the course of history. Lacking in the
spirit of renunciation people have turned selfish. You see the baneful results of this selfishness
everywhere in the form of greed, cruelty, corruption, cut-throat competition, jealousy, enmity and
on a large scale, warfare.
