Many aspirants prefer to do some comfortable work such as writing, arranging books in the library, holding classes. They dislike hard work such as hewing wood, cleaning utensils and bed-pans, and nursing the sick. They consider these as menial work. They have not tried to understand the real spirit of Karma Yoga. They are yet easy-going aspirants. A real Karma Yogi will take upon his shoulders the most responsible, difficult and the most uninteresting type of work and kill his own little self just to help others. He willingly undergoes pain and suffering in order to serve and please others.

In all things you should always hold before yourself the glorious ideal of the saints and sages of the past and present. You should always judge your actions by their standards. Would Tukaram, Jnanadev, Jesus, Buddha, Sankara, Dattatreya — would they do this? If the answer is 'no', do not do it; or if it is done, resolve never to repeat it. Thus you will grow spiritually. This is the greatest pilgrimage that you have to undertake and complete successfully.
