Rekha Panchami, also known as Raksha Panchami or Rakhya Panjami, the festival is dedicated to Batuk Bhairav – an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Rekha Panchami is observed on the fifth day of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadraba month.
At Jagannath Temple, the ritual of “Rahu Rekha Lagi” is also celebrated, Subarna Rahu Rekha is another Ornaments as like Subarna Chitta use to decorate the forehead of Triad. This is removed from the head of the deities on the day of Snana Purnima and is again put on in the month of Srabana.
As rituals people worship Batuk Bhairav they paint Batuk Bhairav or Bhairav, Ganesha & Mahadev ( Shiba ) on doors of home. some People draw the picture of Nandi the vehicle of Lord Shiba on the Back door. The main reason behind the festival to protect themselves from wild animals. A prayer (invocation) to Lord Shiva is written on palm leaf and is hung on the top of the door. Along with the palm leaf, kusha grass and a small packet of rice also hung on the door. They offering foods to wild animal like snakes at night as rituals.

Rituals during Raksha Panchami:
Devotees get up early on Raksha Panchami and finish their morning rituals to begin preparations for the puja. On this day, images or paintings of Lord Ganesh, Batuka Bhairav and Lord Shiva or Mahadeb is drawn on every door of the house. Some people also draw a painting of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s vehicle on the back door.
Devotees write a small prayer to Lord Shiva on a palm leaf and hang it on the topmost part of the door. Along with this leaf, a small packet of rice and kusha grass is also hung on each door.
On Raksha Panchami there is a unique ceremony of making small offerings to snakes and other wild animals.
शास्त्रों के अनुसार रक्षा पंचमी का पर्व भाद्रपद मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की पंचमी को मनाया जाता है. शास्त्रों इसे रेखा पंचमी और शांति पंचमी कहकर भी संबोधित किया जाता है. ऐसी मान्यता है कि जो व्यक्ति रक्षाबंधन के पर्व पर रक्षासूत्र बंधवाने में असमर्थ रहे थे वो व्यक्ति रक्षा पंचमी के पर्व पर राखी बंधवाकर इस पर्व को मना सकते हैं.
भगवान गणेश और भगवान शिव की पूजा का विधान
रक्षा पंचमी पर श्री गणपति जी का विधिवत पूजन किया जाता है. शास्त्रों में रक्षा पंचमी पर वक्रतुण्ड रुपी हरिद्रा गणेश के पूजन का दूर्वा और सरसों से करने का विधान है. शास्त्रों के अनुसार रक्षा पंचमी के दिन भगवान शंकर के पंचम रुद्रावतार भैरवनाथ की पूजा का विशेष महत्व बताया गया है. नाथ सम्प्रदाय के लोग इस दिन भैरव के सर्पनाथ स्वरुप के विग्रह का पूजन करते हैं.
कैसे करें पूजा...
शास्त्र पद्धति गदाधर के अनुसार इस दिन घर की दक्षिण पश्चिमी दिशा में कोयले अथवा काले चूर्णों से काले रंगों से सर्पों का चित्र बनाकर उनकी पूजा करने का विधान है. सर्प पूजन करने से सर्प प्रसन्न होते हैं और वंशजों को कोई डर नहीं सताता.
भगवान कृष्ण ने भागवत में कहा है कि ‘मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव’ अर्थात ‘सूत्र’ अविच्छिन्नता का प्रतीक है क्योंकि सूत्र (धागा) बिखरे हुए मोतियों को अपने में पिरोकर एक माला के रूप में एकाकार बनाता है. माला के सूत्र की तरह रक्षासूत्र भी लोगों को जोड़ता है.
क्या है पूजन की विधि...
- इस दिन प्रातः काल दैनिक कृत से निवृत होकर विधिवत हरिद्रा गणेश, सर्पनाथ भैरव और शिव के ताड़केश्वर स्वरुप का विधिवत पूजन करें.
- धूप दीप पुष्प गंध और नववैध अर्पित करें और गणेश जी पर दूर्वा, सिंदूर लड्डू चढ़ाएं.
- भैरव जी पर उड़द गुड़ और सिंदूर अर्पित करें और ताड़ के पत्ते पर 'त्रीं ताडकेश्वर नमः' लिखकर घर के उत्तर दिशा के द्वार पर टांग दें.
- ताड़ के पत्ते के साथ-साथ एक पीले रंग की पोटली में दूर्वा, अक्षत, पीली सरसों, कुशा और हल्दी बांधकर टांग दें.
- पूजन में गणेश भैरव और शिव के चित्रों पर रक्षासूत्र स्पर्श करवाकर घर के सभी सदस्यों को बांधें.

Raksha Panchami or Rekha Panchami holds great significance for the residents in the tribal area of Orissa. It is celebrated to get freedom from ‘Mruga’ and also get protection from attacks by wild animals like wolf, tiger and wild dogs. The ‘Rekha’ implying 'line' in Hindi is drawn on the doors on this day to seek safety from wild animals. Raksha Panchami is also an important day in other regions of the country. It is believed that those who missed tying the Rakhi on the day of Raksha Bandhan can do the same on Rekha Panchami.
