Jhulan Yatra is a swing festival observed in the month of Shravan Month (July – August) and is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Lord Jagannath. Jhulan Yatra 2023 (dates) is from august 27th to August 31th.. Jhulan Jatra is an important festival in Lord Jagannath Temple. The festival begins on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Shravan month and ends on Shravan Poornima (full moon).JHULAN YATRA starts form 27th august,ekadasi at Puri jaganath temle.
Jhulan Yatra has its origins in the major Krishna legends and literature such as the Bhagavata Purana, the Harivamsa, and the Gita Govinda, and the metaphor of the swing of the monsoon or 'Sawan Ke Jhuley' have since been used by poets and songwriters to describe the romantic feeling that permeates the rainy season in the Indian subcontinent.
Jhulan Yatra festival is observed only for a day in majority of temples. In some temples, it is observed on all five days from Ekadashi to Purnima. The festival is also a major event in ISKCON Temples.
Jhulan Yatra festival is inspired from Lord Krishna’s pastimes in Vrindavan. It is believed that Lord Krishna, Radha and other Gopis and Gopas used to swing in the monsoon season in Vrindavan.In Brindaban it starts from hariyali tij.In puri it starts from dasami .
During the festival and idol of Lord Krishna is placed on a decorated swing. The swinging takes place along with music and dance. In some temples Lord Krishna is seen along with an idol of Radha
A similar festival is observed by Lord Swaminarayan sect from Ashad Purnima to Shravan Poornima and is known as Hindola.
