INSTRUCTIONS TO DISCIPLES

Swami Sivananda

Competent disciples are never in want of competent Gurus. The disciple achieves results in proportion to his faith in his Guru. The possession of university-degrees cannot entitle a man to be an examiner of a Guru. It is the height of impertinence and foolishness on his part, blinded by the vanity of worldly knowledge, to test the spiritual knowledge of the Guru. A true disciple is concerned only the divine nature of the Guru. The Guru′s actions as man is not the disciple′s concern. Guru′s grace is the only means for making the soul turn towards God. The descent of the Master′s grace can transmute mundane life into divine life. Guru′s grace works in the form of Sadbana in the aspirant. 

True devotion gives infinite courage and boldness. Therefore, if a devotee feels within him a sort of fear or weakness, then it means that his practice of Bhakti is not correct.

EARN TO BE A DISCIPLE

The aspirant who is under the guidance of a Master, and if he be a true disciple, is safe from being led astray. A Guru is a great purifier. He is God Himself. He purifies his students by his presence, his contact and his teaching. See God in your Guru, and not the man in him. Learn humility. Empty yourself. Than approach the Guru. All places of pilgrimage and all deities reside in Guru. Come with reverence. Listen with respect. Imbibe carefully, reasonably. Then practise assiduously, courageously.

Absolute faith in the preceptor is the root of Guru Bhakti Yoga tree. Ever-increasing devotion, humility, obedience, etc., are the branches of the tree. Service is the flower. Self-surrender to him is the immortal fruit.

Live divinely and radiate the Divine nature which is your true and essential being. Live
closely in touch with God. This is the secret of inner spiritual life. It is the secret of blessedness.
May the ideal of Divine living and God attainment ever be radiant before thee. Let life be
lived for reaching perfection in God. The Grace of the Divine ever be upon you.

LEARN TO BE A DISCIPLE

Swami Sivananda

Learn how to be a disciple. Then alone you can derive benefit in the spiritual path. Learn how to obey. Than alone you can command. Go to the Teacher and ask what is the cause of bondage, what is the means of deliverance, what is wisdom, and what is ignorance or Avidya? Listen to all, but follow one. Respect all, but adore one. Gather knowledge from all, but adopt the teachings of one Master. Then you will have rapid spiritual progress. Correct understanding, non-attachment to worldly objects, serenity of mind, restraint of the senses, absence of base passions, faith in the Guru and devotion to God are necessary equipments with which the aspirant has to approach the Guru. ,

A life that is full of the spirit of service, full of the light of love for all, full of devotion to
God, is the real Divine Life. This Divine Life is open to you always; you have to tread it by prayer,
by love, by service, by sweetness in speech and sweetness in life, by acts of benevolence and
kindness, by deeds of service and sacrifice. You are indeed blessed to have come to this Ashram
twice. The blessing is lasting in its transforming effect upon your mind. Though the present way be
spiritually dull, soon you will have to inspire yourself by an intensive study of Sri Gurudev’s

literature and other inspiring religious works

SPIRITUAL PRECEPTOR

Guru is the way, the truth, the life and light. The mercy of Guru or preceptor reveals the Lord here and now. A true Guru or preceptor manifests the spirit of divine love. Guru is God, Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. He is indeed the Supreme Brahman. There is none higher than Guru. Meditate on Guru as Lord Siva, Lord Hari, Lord Krishna, or Lord Rama. The highest form of worship of Guru is meticulous practice of his teachings, and living by his example. The relation between a Guru and disciple is real, sacred, and ever-lasting. Even greater than a mother's love for her own child is the love of Guru for the disciple. Guru is a very good shepherd. He guides his disciples, his sheep, when they go astray. Be always true, sincere and loyal to your Guru.

Day by day, if your Sadhana is making you more and more peaceful and blissful, more and more kind and compassionate, then it is fulfilling the purpose for which it is being done as the purpose of all Sadhanas is this inner transformation.

GLORY OF GURU

Guru should not be regarded as a mere human being. Make no distinction between Guru, Mantra, and Devata. The place where Guru dwells is Kailasa. The house in which he lives is Kashi or Varanasi. The water of the Guru′s feet is Amrita. The Mantra uttered by his fair mouth is Brahman Himself. Guru is the place of pilgrimage. Guru is fire. Guru is Surya. Guru is the whole world. All places of pilgrimage in the entire universe reside in the body of the Guru. Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Parvati, Indra, all Devas, all sacred rivers are eternally seated in the Guru′s body. There is no difference between Guru and Ishtadevata. Service of Guru is service of God.

Think positively. You grow into the likeness of the thought picture which you hold on to
with sincerity and persistence. Contemplate upon your ideal into which you wish to grow. This
forms part of daily Spiritual life.

GURU, THE PIVOT OF SPIRITUAL LIFE

Without Guru you cannot achieve anything in the spiritual path. To light a candle, you need a burning candle. Even so, an illumined soul alone can enlighten another soul. The help and guidance of a Sat Guru is essential to cross this ocean of worldly existence. Devotion to the lotus-feet of your Guru is the first requisite in the spiritual path. If Guru is pleased, the Lord Himself is pleased; if Guru is displeased, the Lord is displeased. Grace of the Teacher, and the Mercy of the Lord give the firm conviction " I am Brahman" to the aspirant. God is Guru. Guru is God. Acharyavan purusho veda— He who has a Guru knows the Truth or the Absolute.

Guru doesn′t have to be physically present, he doesn′t have to do or demonstrate something. His very personality is nothing but the radiating of constant blessings.

Pray fervently right now from this very second. You will attain eternal bliss,

Guru is the channel for the flow of the Grace of God. God Himself works through the Guru.
