KAMADA EKADASHI

Sri Suta Goswami said, "Oh sages, let me offer my humble and respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord Hari, Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, by whose mercy I can describe the fast day that removes all kinds of sins.
It was to the devoted Yudhisthira that Lord Krishna glorified the twenty-four primary Ekadasis, which destroy sin, and now I shall recount one of those narrations to you.
Great-learned sages have selected these twenty-four narrations from the eighteen Puranas, for they are truly sublime.

Yudhishthira Maharaja said, 'Oh Lord Krishna, Oh Vasudeva, please accept my humble obeisances. Please describe to me the Ekadasi that occurs during the light part of the month of Chaitra [March-April].
What is its name, and what are its glories?'

Lord Sri Krishna replied, 'Oh Yudhishthira, please listen to Me attentively as I relate the ancient history of this sacred Ekadasi, a history Vasishtha Muni once related to King Dilipa, the great-grandfather of Lord Ramachandra.
King Dilipa asked the great sage Vasishtha, "Oh wise brahmana, I wish to hear about the Ekadasi that comes during the light part of the month of Chaitra.
Please describe it to me."

Vasishtha Muni replied, "Oh king, your inquiry is glories. Gladly shall I tell you what you wish to know. The Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of Chaitra is named Kamada Ekadasi. It consumes all sins, as a forest fire consumes a supply of dry firewood. It is very purifying, and it bestows the highest merit upon one who faithfully observes it.

Oh king, now hear an ancient history which is so meritorious that it removes all one's sins simply by being heard. Once, long ago, there existed a city-state named Ratnapura, which was decorated with gold and jewels and in which sharp-fanged snakes would enjoy intoxication. King Pundarika was the ruler of this most beautiful kingdom, which numbered many Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Apsaras among its citizens. Among the Gandharvas were Lalit and his wife Lalita, who was an especially lovely dancer. These two were intensely attracted to each other, and their home was full of great wealth and fine food.
Lalita loved her husband dearly, and likewise Lalit constantly thought of her within his heart.

Once, at the court of King Pundarika, many Gandharvas were dancing and Lalit was singing alone, without his wife. He could not help thinking about her as he sang, and because of this distraction he lost track of the song's meter and melody. Indeed, Lalit sang the ending of his song improperly, and one of the envious snakes who was in attendance at the king's court complained to the king that Lalit was absorbed in thinking of his wife instead of his sovereign. The king became furious upon hearing this, and his eyes turned crimson with rage.

Suddenly he shouted, 'Oh foolish knave, because you were lustfully thinking of a woman instead of reverently thinking of your king as you performed your court duties, I curse you to at once become a cannibal! Oh king, Lalit immediately became a fearful cannibal, a great man-eating demon whose appearance terrified everyone. His arms were eight miles long, his mouth was as big as a huge cave, his eyes were as awesome as the sun and moon, his nostrils resembled enormous pits in the earth, his neck was a veritable mountain, his hips were four miles wide, and his gigantic body stood a full sixty-four miles high. Thus poor Lalit, the loving Gandharva singer, had to suffer the reaction of his offense against King Pundarika.

Seeing her husband suffering as a horrible cannibal, Lalita became overwhelmed with grief. She thought, 'Now that my dear husband is suffering the effects of the kings' curse, what is to be my lot?
What should I do? Where should I go?'

In this way Lalita grieved day and night.
Instead of enjoying life as a Gandharvas wife, she had to wander everywhere in the thick jungle with her monstrous husband, who had fallen completely under the spell of the king's curse and was wholly engaged in terrible sinful activities.
He wandered fitfully across forbidding region, a once-beautiful Gandharva now reduced to the ghastly behaviour of a man-eater.
Utterly distraught to see her dear husband suffer so much in his dreadful condition, Lalita began to cry as she followed his mad journeying.

By good fortune, however, Lalita came upon the sage Shringi one day.
He was sitting on the peak of the famous Vindhyachala Hill.
Approaching him, she immediately offered the ascetic her respectful obeisances.

The sage noticed her bowing down before him and said, 'Oh most beautiful one, who are you?
Whose daughter are you, and why have you come here? Please tell me everything in truth.

Lalita replied, 'Oh great age, I am the daughter of the great Gandharva Viradhanva, and my name is Lalita.
I roam the forests and plains with my dear husband, whom King Pundarika has cursed to become a man-eating demon.
Oh brahmana, I am greatly aggrieved to see his ferocious form and terribly sinful activities.
Oh master, please tell me how I can perform some act of atonement on behalf of my husband.
What pious act can I perform to free him from this demonic form, Oh best of brahmanas?

'The sage replied, 'Oh heavenly maiden, there is an Ekadasi named Kamada that occurs in the light fortnight of the month of Chaitra.
It is coming up soon.
Whoever fasts on this day has all his desires fulfilled.
If you observe this Ekadasi fast according to its rules and regulations and give the merit you thus earn to your husband, he will be freed from the curse at once.'

Lalita was overjoyed to hear these words from the sage.
Lalita faithfully observed the fast of Kamada Ekadasi according to the instructions of the sage Shringi, and on Dvadasi she appeared before him and the Deity of Lord Vasudeva and said, 'I have faithfully observed the fast of Kamada Ekadasi.
By the merit earned through my observance of this fast, let my husband be free from the curse that has turned him into a demoniac cannibal.
May the merit I have gained thus free him from misery.'

As soon as Lalita finished speaking, her husband, who stood nearby, was at once freed from the king's curse.
He immediately regained his original form as the Gandharva Lalit, a handsome heavenly singer adorned with many beautiful ornaments.
Now, with his wife Lalita, he could enjoy even more opulence than before.
All this was accomplished by the power and glory of Kamada Ekadasi.
At last the Gandharva couple boarded a celestial airplane and ascended to heaven.

Lord Sri Krishna continued, 'Oh Yudhishthira, best of kings, anyone who hears this wonderful narration should certainly observe holy Kamada Ekadasi to the best of his ability, such great merit does it bestow upon the faithful devotee.
I have therefore described its glories to you for the benefit of all humanity.
There is no better Ekadasi than Kamada Ekadasi.
It can eradicate even the sin of k
illing a brhmana, and it also nullifies demoniac curses and cleanses the consciousness.
In all the three worlds, among movable and immovable living entities, there is no better day

Modern ClockImportance of Amalaki Ekadashi

As per the Hindu calendar, the day attains more significance because of its relation to other festivals. Perhaps, the most popular festivals such as Holi too are known to consider Amalaki Ekadashi as the beginning of grand celebrations. Worshipping a tree by referring it to God is one of the symbolic representations of Hinduism from a broader perspective. Devotees are known to offer their sincere prayers to the God when needed the most. With the widespread belief that the Universal Spirit resides in the amla tree, more worshippers are known to offer their prayers to the God by each passing year.

Goddess Lakshmi is considered to be the omnipresent deity during certain instances because of which people offer their sacred prayers to the Goddess of Wealth. Also, it is highly speculated that Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, along with his beloved Radha is known to reside near the tree. People have totally different motives in mind whenever they are praying to the amla tree. For instance, the most significant health benefits from a medicinal perspective, the amla tree is known to offer prosperity and health to all those who pray to it. Amla tree is largely used for the manufacture of modern medicines that are included with Vitamin C.

Legend Associated with Amalaki Ekadashi

According to one of the mythological inscriptions, King Chitrasena along with his followers too had observed this fast . During one of his hunting experiences, the mighty king got captured by a group of asuras (demons) who never relented to release him. However, they were successfully destroyed after a divine power emerged right from the body of King Chitrasena to which everyone remained aghast and speechless. After getting back to his conscious self, the king learned from Akashvani that it was because of the Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat that he got protected.

The preparation for Ekadashi Vrat begins on the Dasami day (10th day in a lunar calendar) – the day before Ekadasi.

On the Ekadashi day (11th day), devotees observe complete fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses, performing pujas and spending time in temples.

There are also several Vishnu devotees who do not observe total fast. They avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk. Some people stay awake during night.

The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day, the 12th day in a lunar calendar, with the consuming of food cooked in one’s house.

Vijaya Ekadashi occurs during the waning phase of moon (Krishna Paksha) in pousha mash., the date of Vijaya Ekadashi isMARCH 9th 2021. The greatness of this Ekadasi is mentioned in the Skanda Purana and observing of Vijaya Ekadasi helps in removing all the guilt associated with sins committed and also helps in attaining victory. It is believed that Lord Ram observed Vijaya Ekadashi to cross the ocean to reach Lanka and defeat Ravana.

The importance of Vijaya Ekadasi was narrated to Narada by Lord Brahma. Legend has it that when Lord Ram and his army – the Vanarasena – was searcing for a means to cross the ocean to reach Lanka,
Then Lakshman came up with the idea that there is an ashram of a famous Sage named Bakadalabhya nearby, he is believed to have had darshan of Lord Brahma, and he will be surely able to guide us.

Lord Ram and others agreed to this idea and went to the ashram of the Sage. The holy saint immediately understood that it was Sri Hari Vishnu who was standing before him. Saint Bakadalabhya welcomed Lord Ram and asked him what help he could be off.
Lord Ram said that he was searching for means to cross the mighty ocean with his army and reach Lanka.
Saint Bakadalabhya then advised Lord Ram to observe the Ekadasi
It is this sage who mentioned about Vijaya Ekadashi to Lord Ram and its benefits – observing it will help in being victorious.
All the normal rules associated with Ekadashi fasting is observed during Vijaya Ekadasi. Some people don’t sleep on the day. Grains and food made of rice are strictly avoided.

Each Ekadashi vrat has its own story and importance. Jaya Ekadashi is the Ekadashi observed for forgiveness of the sins committed in the past life and freedom from bhoot (ghost) and pisaach (vampire) yoni. Those who seek salvation, observing a fast on the day of Jaya Ekadashi can help them attain moksha. People who observe fasting on Jaya Ekadashi will uttermost devotion find a place in Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Other than this, praying to Lord Vishnu on this day is believed to bring good fortune and health and wealth to the devotees.
is treated as Bheesma Ekadashi in Karnataka where huge number of worshipers of Lord Vishnu throng the temples on the day. People observe fast on the auspicious day as part of offering their prayers to the deity. Special pujas too are performed dedicated to Lord Shiva on the same day. Hence, the fast is held in high esteem regarded as doubly beneficial.

Legend Behind Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi is also known as Bhishma Ekadashi because of the historical facts associated with it. According to the legend, the term got coined so because Bhishma considered this day to reach heavenly abode with Brahman, the Supreme Soul. Post Mahabharata, Bhishma rendered Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram to Pandavas on the same day while still being on the bed of arrows. This is one reason why the entire Hindu community all over the world regards the day in the most respectful manner. All the Hindu devotees begin the day with fast and continue it throughout the day to cleanse themselves of the sins committed by them.

How to Observe Jaya Ekadashi

Attaining salvation (Moksha) is one of the primary objectives for others to observe fast on Jaya Ekadashi. People are left with the choice of observing a full or partial fast on the day as per their convenience and capacity. Preparations for the fast begin a day before Jaya Ekadashi with the consumption of a single meal alone. Ardent devotees begin their day early by waking up early and taking a bath before dedicating their time to Lord Vishnu. Ekadashi Parana (fast breaking ritual) is followed once the fast has been completed successfully.

Shattila Ekadashi, also known as Sattila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadashi, is observed usually in the month of January during the waning phase of the moon. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Shattila Ekadashi is performed on the 11th day in the month of Magh, in North India and Paush, in other regions, as per the traditional Hindu calendar. The name Sat-Tila has been derived from til which means sesame seeds which are donated to the poor and hungry. The devotees also consider it highly auspicious to bath in water mixed with sesame seeds. They also offer oblations by mixing water with sesame seeds to their dad ancestors. An interesting story lies behind the observance of the Shattila Ekadashi fasting.
How To Observe Shattila Ekadashi Vrat
A religious and devoted rich woman performed all the Ekadashi vrats unfailingly. She fed the poor and Brahmins heavily with clothes, jewelry and various other items, the exception being food and grains. Once, Lord Krishna appeared disguised as a poor mendicant wearing torn clothes begging for food on Shattila Ekadashi day. The rich woman agreed to give food but only after the mendicant mentioned his gothra. Nonetheless, the mendicant continued to beg for food. Angrily, the rich woman placed a rolled ball of clay in the begging pot of the mendicant. He blessed her and left.

To the womans surprise when she went indoors to have her food, all the food items that she had cooked turned into clay. Even the fruits, rice and vegetables had become clay. Hence, the woman became hungry and started turning pale over the days and years. She grew weaker and weaker. With all the wealth in her hand, she could not get food for herself. She began praying to Lord Krishna for repentance and soon, the Lord appeared in her dreams. He then brought to the knowledge of the woman that the biggest dhanam is Anna Danam, or feeding the hungry, which she had been ignoring.

He further informed that by performing Sattila Ekadashi, she would be relieved of her all miseries. While performing this ritual, she donated til (sesame) seeds to all the poor and hungry that arrived at her door. Eventually, all the food items turned back to their original forms. Thereafter, the woman kept her doorways open for any hungry passing by her way. Thus, since then, Sattila Ekadashi is practiced continuously on the pretext of redeeming ones sins. While observing the Shattila Ekadashi vrat, foods made from rice and grains are avoided while the other Ekadashi fasting rules apply to this day as well. Some devotees even eat sesame seeds as part of the vrat.

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi(Vaikuntha ekadashi)

Paush Kabir Ekadashi is celebrated by Hindus with a lot of pomp and fervor across India. Addressed with several alternative names such as Pausha Putrada Ekadashi and Putrada Ekadashi, this is one of the important vrats (fasts) observed by the entire Hindu community in order to ensure that they are blessed with a son. Special pujas are performed on this auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. People throng temples in long numbers all over India to offer their due respect to the divine entity.

According to Sanskrit language pundits, putrada refers to “giver of son” and refers to Lord Vishnu. More specifically, the day is observed on the Ekadashi and comes during the months of December and January. Childless couples too await for this special day so that they could be blessed with a son by the God. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is another similar event that is observed during the months of July and August. Scholars and pundits have got unique significance between both the festivals because of the specific importance given to both the festivals.

Vaishnavas are known to offer their sacred prayers to Lord Vishnu so that they are blessed with a son. Newly married couples consider it as a tradition to ensure that keeping vrat on this day with a lot of dedication so that their prayers are answered for sure. Hindus consider the birth of son as a divine blessing from God as a male child is known to perform various traditional rites. This custom is being observed since several ages. Additionally, sons are known to take care of parents during their old age. Bhavishya Purana too has references to the Putrada Ekadashi. This has been made clear by Lord Krishna to King Yudhishthira during one of his divine briefings.

As part of observing this day with utmost respect, couples are known to avoid select fruits and vegetables reflecting their devotion to Lord Vishnu. It has been mentioned in the purana that every Hindu must observe Ekadashi with a lot of respect to surrender themselves to God and attain moksha. Sons are known to perform “shraddha”, which is a kind of ritual meant for the peace of souls as per the traditional Hindu customs.

Benefits - Vaikuntha Ekadashi is also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi. It is believed that Vaikuntha Dwaram or the gate of Lord's inner sanctum is opened on this day and devotees who observe fast on Vaikuntha Ekadashi attain salvation by going to Heaven.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi is very important day for Tirumala Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi is known as Swarga Vathil Ekadashi in Malayalam Calendar followed by people of Kerala.
