MAYA DOCTRINE

Maya is the veiling power of the reality, which makes matter appear as a self-sustaining entity, which it is not. It is Maya which deludes man to think that the body acts, the mind thinks, the eyes see, the ears hear, through their own agencies, without being aware of the fact that it is the Atman which makes all these instruments function. Vedanta proclaims the victory of the spirit over matter. The doctrine of Maya is not pessimistic. It helps man to see things in their true nature. The son is dear to man because the Atman is dear to him. The wife is dear to man because the Atman is dear to him. Man loves another because, in truth, he loves himself. The veiling power of Maya makes man associate everything with his little self—the mind, the ego, the body, instead of with his higher Self. By right understanding of the Maya doctrine, one comes to know the nature of the illusion, and identifies oneself with the reality. Maya disappears with the dawn of Self-knowledge.
