NATURE OF A WICKED MAN

Swami Sivananda

A wicked man speaks ill of others and is himself censured. He always speaks of his own charitable acts. He beholds others with malicious eyes. He is very mean, deceitful, and wily. He never pays others their dues. He is haughty. He lives in evil company. He fears and suspects all with whom he mixes. He is miserly. He takes delight in injuring others. He is a terrible liar. He is discontented. He is highly covetous and always acts cruelly. Know him for a wicked or malevolent person who quietly takes choice foods and drinks when persons stand by with eager eyes. He commits sinful acts and feels an irresistible inclination for doing them. A wicked man is miserable both in this world and in the next. Such a person should be shunned by students and wise men.

Religion Means 'To Do.' It is only the one two little acts that you actually do, that constitute religion and spirituality. To rise early and take the name of the Lord for ten minutes is what real dharma is.

This human birth is a rare chance, a splendid opportunity of transcending all limitations,
bondage, sorrow, suffering and pain and attaining to a state of illimitable glory, of absolute freedom
from sorrow, pain, suffering, grief and weaknesses of all sorts, going beyond even death and
attaining that Supreme experience of illimitable joy, immeasurable peace, Divine splendour and
Wisdom Consciousness in union with the Divine. This is the aim of our life. This life can be had
only by right living—a life of contemplation and meditation. Live this life and attain
God-realisation in this very life

SUSPICION

Too much suspicious nature is also very bad. This is the opposite of over-credulousness. Mind always moves in extremes. The husband suspects the wife; the wife suspects the husband. There is always a tug-of-war and trouble in the house. The employer suspects his employee, and vice versa. How can business go on smoothly? The world moves on faith. A measure of faith is very necessary in life. A little trust, goodwill and understanding make life tolerable. By a positive attitude one can certainly improve a man who is in the wrong path. By suspicion one can turn even a good man sour. Your attitude to others is a reflection of your mind. If people are too much suspicious, friction and rupture will always go on. Allow a margin and try the goodness in others to prove itself. Do not go to extremes. Do not be over-credulous. Do not be over-suspicious.

Know the value of time. You cannot salvage a second spent in worthless ways. Time is most precious. Utilise every second in spiritual pursuits and service.

The great goal of life is God-realisation. Live to attain this aim. This goal alone is worth
attaining in this life. Pray to the Lord daily. Speak the truth. Do not hate anyone. Respect elders.
Help others. Live a simple and pure life. This is Divine life. This leads you to attain perfection in

ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

Swami Sivananda

Sannyasins, however exalted they may be in spirituality, should not eat meat, eggs, etc., and should not take tobacco, Ganja and opium. They should not smoke also. If they do so, they set up a very bad example to the public. They should lead an ideal exemplary life and advice the householders to give up meat, eggs, etc. Mind always imitates. If the Guru eats one pound of meat daily, the disciple will eat five pounds daily. "Yatha Guru Tatha Sishyal"— "Just as the Guru is, so is the disciple. " Sannyasa is sterner stuff, indeed. Comfortable Sannyasa is very dangerous. It is no Sannyasa at all. All the rules prescribed for Sannyasins in the Narada-Parivrajaka-Upanishad should be rigidly followed by Sannyasins. Then only they can shine as true ideal Sannyasins. Then only they can set an example to the householders. Glory to the true, ideal Sannyasin, who leads an exemplary life! This world is in dire need of true, ideal Sannyasins who will serve the country and humanity with Atma Bhava and disseminate Self-knowledge and Bhakti, far and wide. May Sannyasins, the repositories of divine knowledge, the torch-bearers of Truth, the beacon light of this world, the corner-stones of spiritual edifice and the central pillars of the eternal Dharmas of religion, guide the different nations of the world.

Inner urge towards the spiritual life and the heart’s desire to draw closer unto and commune
with the Supreme is a gift from God. It is a practical expression of Grace.
Peace is a divine attribute. It is a quality of the Soul or Atman. It is found only in the pure
heart. Real inner Peace is independent of external conditions. By feeling the Lord’s presence
everywhere, you can become fearless, and enjoy infinite peace and bliss

Tapas is the process of stilling the senses and the mind and allowing the lustre of the Atman to manifest itself spontaneously.

ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

A Sannyasin should understand that this body which is supported by the pillars of bones, bound by ligaments, which is plastered over with flesh and blood, and covered with skin, as the foul-smelling refuge of urine and excreta. He shall have to quit this bodily frame which is subject to old age and imbecility which is the abode of diseases, afflicted with pain and suffering, the transitory embodiment of material elements, characterised by the impure quality of Rajas and Tamas. A Sannyasin must constantly mutter the sacred Mantras related to the Wisdom of Brahman and the sentences of the Vedanta which treat of the Eternal Truth. Brahman is the refuge of the all-knowing as well as ignorant beings. It is the final Goal of the aspirations of all who wish to become Immortal.  

Renunciation of the ego that comes out of this ignorance, this identification�that is sannyasa. Renunciation of selfishness that springs out of the ego�that is sannyasa. Renunciation of attachment that springs out of another aspect of ego, I-ness and mine-ness�that is sannyasa. Renunciation of desires, the innumerable desires�their number is legion�that follow in the train of ego identification, attachment and selfishness�that is real tyaga that is real sannyasa.

ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

Sannyasins do not want to remove Mala (impurities) by Nishkamya Karma Yoga. They think that service and Bhakti are nothing. They at once shave their heads, put on coloured clothes, remain in a cave and pose as great Munis or Yogins. They study a few books on Vedanta and style themselves as Jivanmuktas. This is a serious mistake. Even if there is one real Jivanmukta, he is a great dynamic force to guide the whole world. Some Sannyasins of the old, orthodox school think that a Jivanmukta is without powers. He can change or alter the destiny of the whole world.

Glorious Sannyasin! Serve everyone with intense love, without the idea of agency, without expectation of fruits, reward or even appreciation. Utilise this body-machine in selfless works. Feel that you are only Nimitta (instrument) in the hands of God or a Sakshi (witness) of Prakriti′s activities when you do Karma Yoga.

Man is a soul having a body. Man is essentially a spiritual being. Man’s innermost essence
is Atman or the Divine Spirit. Realising the Spirit, man achieves security, freedom, immortality

ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

Glorious Sannyasin! Serve everyone with intense love, without the idea of agency, without expectation of fruits, reward or even appreciation. Utilise this body-machine in selfless works. Feel that you are only Nimitta (instrument) in the hands of God or a Sakshi (witness) of Prakriti′s activities when you do Karma Yoga. Have no attachment to any place, person or thing. Keep up the mental poise amidst the toil and moil of the world without consideration of success or failure, gain or loss, victory or defeat, respect or disrespect, pleasure or pain. Have always a balanced mind. Have the mind firmly rooted in the Self amidst all activities. Then you will become a true Karma Yogi. Work elevates, when done in the right spirit. Even if people scoff at you, revile, beat, kill or taunt you, always be indifferent. Be steady in your Sadhana.

Before you open the Dispensary, offer prayers to the Lord. Treat the patients with love and
kindness. Kindness and love cure them more rapidly than medicines. See God in them. This is the
secret to attain joy and happiness

When you see a Sannyasin, you feel happy that your friend is there. A Sannyasin is a friend of all people. He has no enemies, and no person is afraid of him. No person in the world is afraid of a Sannyasin, because he will not harm anyone. He gives abhaya, fearlessness, to all creatures.
