ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

Sannyasins should, on their part, be rooted in Advaitic Consciousness. Mere study of Vichara Sagar or Panchadasi cannot bring in the experience of pure, Advaitic Consciousness. Vedantic gossiping and idle, dry talk on Brahma Sutras and Upanishads cannot help one in feeling the unity or oneness of life. There is no hope for him to feel the Advaitic unity of consciousness— "Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma" — all indeed is Brahman�, unless the aspirant destroys ruthlessly all sorts of Ghrina, hatred, petty-mindedness, jealousy, envy, ideas of superiority, and all barriers that separate man from man, by incessant, protracted service of humanity with the right mental attitude or Divine Bhava. Practical Vedanta is rare in these days. There are only dry discussions and

meaningless fights over the non-essentials of various religions.

To lead the spiritual life it is not necessary to withdraw into the forest, hide oneself in a cave or go to a mountain top. What is needed is the renunciation of false ideas, of identification with the false human personality. It requires renunciation of ego, abhimana, ahamkara, renunciation of desire, renunciation of attachment, renunciation of mamata and asakti (mine-ness and attachment).

ADVICE TO SANNYASINS

A real Sannyasin is the only mighty potentate on this earth. He never takes anything. He always gives. It was Sannyasins only who did glorious, sublime work in the past. It is Sannyasins only who can work wonders in the present and in the future also. Sri Sankara�s name can never be obliterated so long as the world lasts. It was Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayananda, and Swami Rama Tirtha who disseminated the sublime teachings of the scriptures and preserved Hindu religion. A Sannyasin alone can do real Lokasangraha, because he has divine knowledge, he is a whole-timed man. One real Sannyasin can change the destiny of the whole world. It was one mighty Sankara who established the doctrine of Kevala Advaita philosophy. He still lives in our hearts.

Every religion has a band of anchorites who lead the life of seclusion and meditation. There are Bikshus in Buddhism, Fakirs in Islam, Sufistic Fakirs in Sufism, Fathers and Reverends in Christianity. The glory of a religion will be absolutely lost if you remove these hermits or Sannyasins or those who lead a life of renunciation and divine contemplation. It is these people who maintain the religions of the world. It is these people who give solace to householders when they are in trouble and distress. They are the harbingers of divine wisdom and peace. They are the messengers of Atmic knowledge and heavenly messages. They are the disseminators of Adhyatmic (spiritual) science and Upanishadic revelations. They heal the sick, comfort the forlorn, nurse the bed-ridden. They bring hope to the hopeless, joy to the depressed, strength to the weak, courage to the timid by imparting the knowledge of Vedanta and the significance of the "Tat Tvam Asi" Mahavakya.

SHYNESS

Swami Sivananda

Shyness is a great hindrance in the path of success in life. This is a form of timidity or low fear. Almost all boys have got this weakness. This is a feminine quality. A boy should not be shy. Shyness manifests when man is in the wrong path. A shy man cannot express his thoughts. He cannot approach any stranger freely. Modesty is not shyness. Modesty is decency or chastity. This comes out of politeness and polish of character. Shyness is a great hindrance. It should be eradicated by developing courage.

"Yourself" is the greatest obstacle to happiness, peace and fulfillment. All pain, suffering, sorrow and trouble come because of your clinging to this peculiar thing called "yourself". The greatest good that can happen is to be liberated from yourself.

PESSIMISM

Pessimism is a temper of mind that looks too much on the darker side of things. It is the doctrine that the whole world is bad rather than good. It is a depressing view of life. The Vedantins, though they say that the world is unreal, are wonderful optimists. They talk of dispassion to create a taste in the minds of people for the immortal, blissful life in God, and a distaste for the worthless materialistic life in this world. The opposite of pessimism is optimism. It always looks on to the bright side of the picture. A pessimist is ever gloomy and depressed, lazy and lethargic. Cheerfulness is unknown to him. He infects others. Pessimism is like an epidemic and infectious disease. A pessimist cannot get success in this world. Become a powerful optimist and rejoice. Try to be cheerful under any condition of life.

Mind is more turbulent than wind, more mischievous than monkey, more subtle than ether, more powerful than all the armies of the world put together. Control of the mind is conquest of nature, which immediately

leads

INTOLERANCE

There is religious intolerance. There is communal intolerance. Intolerance is nothing short of petty-mindedness. It is unreasonable dislike for little things. All restlessness and fighting in this world take their origin in intolerance. The capitalist is intolerant of the communist and vice versa. A Hindu is intolerant towards a Muslim and vice versa. An Arya Samajist is intolerant towards a Sanatanist and vice versa. This is due to perfect ignorance. All these small, petty differences are pure mental creations. Expand. Expand. Embrace all, include all and love all, in the spirit of mental charity. Serve all. Behold the Lord in all. Unite your heart with all. Change the angle of vision. Be liberal and catholic in your views. Destroy all barriers that separate man from man.

ON DIVINE LIFE
The practice of virtue, the worship of God and Paropakar to others—these three form the
very essence of a truly noble life. Never neglect them. Ever practise them. This is real earning
(Kamayi). He who has this earning, he accumulates the greatest wealth even though his earthly
income may be modest. Blessed self! accumulate this wealth by living a Divine life in the midst of

your ordinary secular life. Have a rich inner life. Joy and peace will come to you.
