NATURE OF BRAHMAN

Swami Sivananda

The Absolute is suprarational. Though it transcends thought, it is not unconscious. Para Brahman is beginningless and endless. Impersonal Para Brahman cannot think, cannot know. It is knowledge itself. It is a mass of pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is self-luminous but devoid of relation to objects. Existence implies consciousness, devoid of which Existence has no reality and hence equals non-existence. Existence-Absolute should always be Consciousness-Absolute. This Consciousness-Absolute cannot function; for by functioning it will be contradicting the actionless Reality. Therefore, this consciousness can only be in the form of Self-awareness.

Instances are not lacking where recluses in solitude, after years of asceticism, have slowly
slipped into an easy-going life by coming in contact with admiring devotees. When they come to be
well-known, devotees gather round volunteering to do personal service. Not wishing to disappoint
the eager disciples, the ascetic allows a little latitude at first, but it grows upon him until he is a slave
to every sort of luxury.

Truth can never be dual. Duality presupposes unity. Brahman is Supra Silence. Brahman is neither that which had an origin some time ago, nor that which will end some time later. Brahman rests in itself. It is calm. It is unspeakable. It is the highest bliss, unborn. Brahman is non-contradictory. Brahman transcends the phenomenal world. They are not separate. That which you cannot think through mind, but that by which the mind is made to think, know that alone to be Brahman. Brahman or the Infinite is the Atma or Self of all beings. He pervades everything in this universe. All this is certainly Brahman. Thou art That; be what thou art.

God is focusing upon you with all His love and grace, with this one view that He wants to make out of you the finest of human individuals on earth in this period.

In Brahman or the Absolute there exists no distinction between substance and attributes. In the Absolute there is neither past, nor present, nor future; there is neither here, nor there, nor up and down. It is the mind that creates time and space. Being (Sat), Knowledge (Chit) and Bliss (Anand) are not attributes of Brahman. They are its essence. Brahman is unconditioned and unborn. From whom all these visible things emanated, by whom they live, and in whom they disappear and enter? That is Brahman or the Supreme Being. Life here is impossible without Him. Brahman is the sum of all perfection. Brahman is absolute existence, wisdom, and infinite self-luminous consciousness. 

 Overcome anger by love, evil by good, greed by liberality, fear by courage, falsehood by truth, pride by humility, infatuation by enquiry, harshness by gentleness and sweetness, immorality by morality, and worldliness by divinity.

Gurudev once cautioned a group of aspirants to be alive to the stealthy power of
unconscious habits. “For,” he said, “Man is sybarite by nature. You may be very zealous in your
austerity and vows in the beginning. But if you are not on the guard, slowly will the vigour be
relaxed; comforts will creep in and you will be caught hopelessly. If the body is allowed to relapse
into softness and luxury, you will find it well nigh impossible to discipline it again.”

Brahman is the only Supreme Reality, whence the phenomenal world evolves. Behind the changing phenomena there is the unchanging Noumenon or Brahman. This Noumenon is the same as the Oversoul of Emerson, the Unknowable of Herbert Spencer, the great Mind of James Steams, the Father in Heaven of the Christians, the Dharmakaya of the Buddhists, the Brahman of the Hindus, and the Tao of the Chinese, the Good of Plato, the transcendental Thing-in-Itself of Kant, the Will of Schopenhauer, the Substance of Spinoza. Brahman is transcendental intuition shining by itself without implying any process of knowledge. Brahman is self-shining, imperishable, immaculate, all-pervading and impartite. The non-dual, absolute consciousness alone really exists for ever..

You will also be tested by God for your sincerity and patience. He will make you utterly
helpless and watch and see whether you have devotion for them or not in such straitened
circumstances. We cannot say exactly what form these trials will take. But the sincere devotee is
never afraid of these tests.
A grim endurance of all vicissitudes and a dogged resolution to persevere to the end are
essential if one has to realise the Ideal. For indeed, rough and rugged is the march on the steep and
narrow way!

Adorations to that Supreme Being, who is Consciousness Absolute, from whom are the cognizar, the cognition and the object cognized; the seer who appears as the seeing and the object seen—the agent, the instrument and the act. Para Brahman is the Absolute. Absolute is the complete, the Perfect Being which lacks nothing and needs nothing. Brahman or the Absolute is all in all. To know Him is to be free from ignorance. Brahman is the only ultimate Reality. Brahman is one without a second. Maya is the energy of Brahman, which brings forth the imaginary world in the mind of man. Para Brahman is Himself Satchidananda, and is above and beyond name and form, while in relation to the universe He is the creator, preserver and destroyer.

The beggarliness of the mind can never be satisfied. Be contented in whatever position God has placed you. That is the key to all happiness and peace.

Obeisance to that Supreme Effulgence, the Light of lights, which is an embodiment of peace, bliss and wisdom. To that which is the Supreme Intelligence, the Eternal Bliss, to that which is unreachable by mind and words, to that Eternal Peace. I offer my obeisance and salutations. Salutations to that Supreme Being, who is Existence Absolute, from whom all beings appear, in whom all beings exist, and into whom all beings merge,

Chitta-suddhi or purification of the mind is an indispensable condition for attaining success in Yoga and Samadhi.

PRACTICE OF YOGA

The Yogi gets immense inner spiritual strength through practice of concentration and meditation. Enlightenment dawns in the Yogi whose mind is perfectly serene, who has calmed his passionate nature, who has destroyed all sorts of attachments and who has attained equipoise of mind and inner harmony. The self-controlled Yogi tries to keep poise under all conditions and amidst the pairs of the opposites. Yoga includes iron determination, fiery resolve, faith, earnestness, powerful concentration, well-balanced mind, and purity. Those who have not disciplined the mind and the senses, who have not practised regular meditation, who have not developed the faculty of discrimination, who have not eradicated lust, egoism, anger, greed, etc., cannot be called Yogins.

“I would like to bow down from a pretty distance to such deceiving knowledge and prefer
one thousand times to be called the ignorant and cling fast to my soul-uplifting culture and heritage
which guarantees me purity, manliness, divinity, character, integrity, unselfishness and love for
mankind.”
Be careful, brethren, that scientific knowledge devoid of religion and spirituality will
quicken only the world-doom since it provides in the hand of the all-devouring brutal instinct of the
degenerated man another addition of deadly power for self-destruction.
Power verily corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Therefore neglect not the foremost duty of building up character, nobility, godliness and
love for the search of your true nature
