Varuthini Ekadashi is observed during Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha month according to North Indian Purnimant calendar and Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month according to South Indian Amavasyant calendar. However both North Indian and South Indian observe it on the same day

A reference of Varuthini Ekadashi has been made in Bhavishya Purana. God Krishna narrates the relevance of Varuthini Ekadashi to King Yudhisthira as he mentions that on this auspicious day animals could free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. Similarly any person suffering from a life threatening disease could be cured if they pray to Lord Vishnu on Varuthini Ekadashi.

Donating to the needy brings luck on Varuthini Ekadashi. A detailed account of objects that could be donated has been listed in Bhavishya Purana. Donating horse, elephant, land, sesame seeds respectively will bring luck to the devotees on Varuthini Ekadashi.

If a person decides to donate on Varuthini Ekadashi, the ancestors and family members will benefit.

Rituals

Just as on other Ekadashi days, Lord Vishnu is worshiped on Varuthini Ekadashi as well. His fifth avatar Lord Vamana is specially worshiped on the occasion. Devotees make special preparations for the day wherein they have to follow certain rules to make the occasion fruitful for them and everyone else.

Devotional songs are sung during the night hours and everyone in the family participates in the festivities.
