MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1213

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1213

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

ADVICE TO STUDENTS - BE A GOOD BOY

Swami Sivananda
Dear Govinda! Do not fight with your brothers and class-mates. Obey your parents and teachers. Do not smoke. This is a bad habit. Give up bad company. Do not use vulgar words. Do not abuse anybody. Be kind to all. Serve all. Love all. Respect elders. Do not steal anything. Do not hurt anybody. Speak gently. Speak sweetly. Be punctual in your school attendance. Study your daily lessons well. Stand first in the class. Do not play much. Do not hurt animals. Do not kill bugs and scorpions. Do not waste time.

And ultimately I conclude by recalling to you the two great instructions given by Sri
Krishna—Vairagya and Abhyasa; for when all these things have been said and done, the underlying
secret of overcoming this Vikshepa of the mind is Vairagya only. Why are you not able to control
the mind through meditation? Because it runs after things. What things? It runs after the things to
which it is attached. Raga is at the root of Vikshepa. Raga comes through Avichara. You imagine
that the objects of the world will give you happiness. This is Avichara. You should do Vichara,
discrimination; you should find out the defects of worldly pleasures and develop Vairagya towards
all kinds of earthly pleasures. So there should be Vichara, there should be Vairagya, and combined
with these, if you practise the things already mentioned, you will be able to progress on the path of
Yoga and Vedanta, on the path of divine living.
Swami Chidananda

Self-realisation is synonymous with the attainment of unlimited spiritual strength. It is the strength born of independence, freedom in the highest sense. Power that is a result of the idea of possession is imaginary.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1212

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1212

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

ADVICE TO STUDENTS - STUDY WELL

Swami Sivananda
Do not cram a subject. When you study, understand the sense well. Study intelligently. Then it is easy to remember what you have studied. Be very attentive when you study. Be very hopeful always. Read everything thoroughly. Study your old lessons again and again. If you do not do so you will forget them. Try to reproduce what you have learnt in writing. Pray to the Lord daily and ask for His blessings. Possess an exemplary moral character. There can be no real, lasting success without good character. Character is power. Without it life is a failure.

Without knowing your source and origin and your ultimate destination, life cannot be meaningfully lived.

Chant the Maha Mantra

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1211

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1211

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,'

BECOME A HERO

Swami Sivananda
Do not be timid. Be bold. Be cheerful. Be courageous. Walk like a lion. Talk boldly. Remove shyness. Be ever active. Take care of your health. Be strong, healthy and fiery. Whenever you make up your mind to do certain work, do it with all your heart and soul. Finish it anyhow. Do not leave it half done. When you take a book for, study, study it thoroughly. Service and sacrifice must be your motto. Remember those great persons who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the nation and humanity. Be a hero and let your heroism be remembered long. Lead an exemplary life.

He who is a Brahmanishtha (established in Brahman) and Brahmasrotri (who has knowledge of the scriptures) is the right person to instruct you for the attainment of Self-realization.

- Swami Sivananda
Summing Up Of Sadhanas
Therefore remember these. Non-cooperate with the mind. Do not fulfil desires when they
arise. “Nip the Vritti in the bud,” as Gurudev says. Daily have self-introspection and self-analysis,
and in doing that be unsparing to yourself. Do not justify what you discover in the mind and give a
reason for it, but rather, try to devise suitable methods for overcoming what you find inside.
Therefore Kriya Yoga, Practical Sadhana, is necessary for eradicating the defects that you find
through self-introspection and self-restraint, and back the whole thing up by positive Sadhana like
meditation, Japa, Asana, Pranayama, etc. Gurudev’s song of “Eat a little, Drink a little” gives the
basis, or the negative restraint, and also the positive aspect of your Sadhana.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1210

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day.

REAL GREATNESS

Swami Sivananda
Live honestly. Work conscientiously. Act nobly. Try to possess a large heart. A really great man is one who possesses a large heart, great wisdom and good character. Worldly position is nothing in the eyes of God. A poor man may become a great man, if he so desires and if he tries to attain that greatness. Many persons born poor have become great in various walks of life through self-effort. They became great through continuous exertion. Their glorious deeds are imperishable and their names immortal..
Moderation In Everything
You must sleep only a little. You must talk only a little. You should not be a patient of
lingual diarrhoea. Move a little. This means that you should move a little, and not waste your energy
and time by moving about always. The instinctive life of eating, drinking, talking etc., should be
kept to the minimum. The other portion, wherein Gurudev says, “Do Japa a little. Do Asana a little.
Do Kirtan a little,”—means not that they should not be done too much, but here it is the other way
round. Here, Gurudev says that everyone of these items is essential, and all these items should find a
place in your daily programme. Asana, Pranayama, Japa, Kirtana, Meditation, Vichara, all these
things must find a place in your daily life. They are indispensable items which should find a place in
your daily routine, and the more you increase them, the better. And those things of your animal
nature, that life which is purely physical, sensual and bodily, such as, eating, drinking etc.—you
should keep within the rational minimum. All gross things that merely pertain to the body should be
kept to the minimum, and all these higher aspects of Sadhana should be given proper place in yourdaily programme. Therefore, this is the broad general outline of divine life or spiritual living for
you. All these, Japa, meditation, Kirtan, etc., form the positive side; living a life of restraint and not
fulfilling the undue desires of the mind and senses, understanding that to fulfil such demands is to
become greater and greater slaves of the mind and its promptings, and always being based upon
self-restraint and inwardness and making the best use of your quiet hours in introspection and
analysis, so that your Kriya Yoga may be fulfilled. This sums up the essential aspects of divine life.

Yoga is a universal science. It is not a religion of a particular creed, cult or nationality. It is a science of living. Therefore, the way in which we have to rightly live in this world is yoga.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1209

Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

SELF-EXAMINATION

Swami Sivananda
Self-examination is a scrutiny or enquiry into one's own state, conduct, motives, mental and moral condition and thoughts, especially with regard to one's religious feelings and duties. Self-examination consists of self-introspection and self-analysis. Self-examination will lead you to the knowledge of your own nature. It will improve your heart and correct your mistakes, defects, weaknesses and faults. It will bestow wisdom on you. When you are alone, watch your thoughts. Examine your heart. Find out your defects and foibles. Before retiring to bed, take stock of your thoughts, words and acts of the day. Find out: "What evil quality have I mastered today? What temptations have I resisted? Which virtue have I developed today? Which sense have I controlled?" You will then evolve quickly.

You must have the determination that no matter how much the mind pulls in the wrong direction, you will not succumb.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1208

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1208'

Radhe krishna,
Have A blessed day,

SELF-SACRIFICE

Swami Sivananda
Self-sacrifice is the act of yielding up one's interests, or whatever one has for others. Self-preservation is the first law of nature. Self-sacrifice is the highest rule of grace. Self-sacrifice is self-abnegation. It is the sacrifice, surrender or subordination of one's own self or one's personal happiness, or comfort, for the sake of duty or to advance the interests of others. Self-sacrifice kills egoism and leads to the descent of divine grace and divine light. A selfless worker annihilates his ego through self-sacrifice.

Where there is no wavering and wandering of the mind, there is serenity. In serenity there is neither attachment nor fear. In a serene mind, the Light of God descends.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1207

 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1207

Radhe krishna,
Have A blessed day,

TOLERATION

Swami Sivananda
Never condemn rashly but judge righteously. Be charitable and kind to one another. Be tolerant. Religious tolerance is necessary. It will establish religious harmony in the country and among nations. There are diversities of opinion even among the best of men. This should not breed hatred, No two minds are absolutely alike in nature. Intolerance is a crime. Have a wide vision. Have a broad outlook. Give space in your heart for everybody, for every religionist. Be broad as the sky in your attitude. Toleration in religion is absolutely the first fruit of all the struggles and labours.
Selection Of Food
The quality of food that you take, its quantity, and the time you take food, all are important.
A little immoderate food or improper time of taking food may affect your system and render
meditation difficult. You may not take costly food like Badam, but at least take moderate quantity,
take Sattvic food. The whole body should be restrained. You should live a life of moderation. When
Gurudev sings his song of “Eat a little, drink a little,” we have to understand it in its proper sense.
There are two parts of this song. “Eat a little, drink a little, talk a little, sleep a little.” When he say

Everything in the universe is an offering to God. It is a sacrifice that the universe is performing in the very process of evolution.

MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1206
Radhe krishna,
Have a blessed day,

TOLERATION

Swami Sivananda
Toleration is enduring of offensive persons or opinions. Toleration is freedom from bigotry. It is a spirit of charitable leniency. Toleration is a disposition to tolerate or not to judge or deal harshly or rigorously in cases of differences of opinion, conduct or the like. You have not the monopoly of wisdom. Do not criticise destructively. Your neighbour's way and opinion may not be yours. It may, nevertheless, be good according to him.

Live all your life as a continuous offering at the feet of the ever present Divine Being.
