THREE TENDENCIES
Swami SivanandaA Sattwic man will do virtuous actions. A Rajasic and Tamasic man will perform mixed and evil actions, respectively. It is the Guna that goads a man to do actions. When Sattwa predominates, virtuous actions are performed; when there is preponderance of Rajas virtuous and wrong actions are performed; when Tamas predominates, sinful, unlawful and unrighteous actions are done. By performance of good deeds the heart gets slowly purified. Sattwa increases. Rajas and Tamas are slowly thinned out.
A weak aspirant, though he may be strong in concentration, is overcome by idleness; but a strong aspirant, if he is weak in concentration, is over-powered by tossing of mind. Concentration and energy should, therefore, be well-balanced.

Therefore, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that one who considers the sorrow of others as his own
sorrow, the pains of others as his own pain, the sufferings of others as his own suffering, is very dear
to the Lord. Such a person is always engaged in trying to relieve the sufferings of all beings, all
creation. It is not a deliberate act. He feels an innate identity everywhere with all things. His whole
attitude towards others is to treat others as himself.
