 MESSAGE FOR CONTEMPLATION 1191

THE CAUSE FOR BONDAGE

The mind is at the root of the world-process. Desire is the fuel. Thought is the fire. Withdraw the fuel of desire, the fire of thought will be extinguished. Mind is like an ocean; thoughts are the waves. Mind is the organ of sensation and thoughts. Mind thinks, intellect determines, egoism self-arrogates, subconscious mind memorizes. When the mind is calm and pure, you will get glimpses or flashes of intuition. Mind and Prana are interdependent. Prana (vital breath) is the overcoat of the mind. Wherever there is Prana, there is mind; wherever there is mind, there is Prana. Waking state, dream state and deep-sleep state are the three states of mind. Mental actions are the real actions. Thought is the real action. A passionate (active) mind wants variety and new sensations. It gets disgusted with monotony. Change of work is change for the mind. Mind is the gate-keeper. It allows only one thought at a time to enter the mental factory or the mental palace.

If you take a positive view of your life and consider for how many things you have to give thanks to God, you will have no time to complain; all the time will be taken up in saying, "Thank you" to the Supreme Being.

CONTROL OF MIND

Swami Sivananda

You can control the mind through steady practice and dispassion. You can be established in the superconscious state only by long practice, with zeal and faith. Without dispassion or non-attachment or indifference to sensual enjoyments, no spiritual progress is possible. Annihilate the impure mind with the help of the pure or higher mind and transcend the higher mind also. The senses cannot do anything without the co-operation of the mind. Do not try to drive away impure thought. The more you try, the more they will return. Pill the mind with divine thoughts. The impure thoughts will gradually vanish by themselves. Do not try to control the mind through violent methods. You will hopelessly fail. Use the approved and intelligent methods.

Become soldiers of truth, soldiers fighting with the senses and mind, with Ahimsa, Satyam, discrimination, dispassion as weapons, soldiers with the message of universal peace and cosmic love.

God cheer up the body, mind and spirit. Names of God soothe the nerves. Love of God bestows

peace and joy. Knowledge of God breaks the fetters of Karma.
