VALUE OF TRUTHFULNESS

Truthfulness is the first pillar in the Temple of God-realization. There is no penance like Truthfulness. From Truth originate righteousness and self-control. Truth is the gateway to the Kingdom of God. Righteousness is the best acquisition of man. It is the world's highest wealth. Non-injury, continence, purity, justice, harmony, forgiveness and peace are forms of Truth. Impartiality, self-control, forgiveness, modesty, endurance, kindness, renunciation, meditation, dignity, fortitude, compassion and abstention from injury, are the various forms of Truth. Righteousness is the support of the entire world. Righteousness forms the bed-rock of all religions.

You should feel, "Everywhere I am in the presence of God, therefore I must behave in a humble manner."

PRINCIPLES OF ACTION

Swami Sivananda

Revere your superiors, love your equals, and protect and raise your inferiors. Never break your promise, but be quick to perform it. Have no secrets of your own, but do not expose the secrets of others. Frankly admit your faults and mistakes. You will grow in spirituality. Overcome anger by love, evil by good, greed by liberality, fear by courage, falsehood by truth, pride by humility, infatuation by enquiry, harshness by gentleness and sweetness, immorality by morality and worldliness by divinity.

The One Self dwells in all. All are manifestations of the one God. By serving another, you serve your own Self. Love all. Serve all. Hate none. Insult none in thought, word and deed. Herein lies success in the spiritual path.

In the Sannyasa life, meditation and collecting food for his livelihood were the Dharmas
enjoined upon the man who had done all his duties to society, to the nation, to his own family and to
his friends. He has now no more attachment and has but to fulfil the one great duty, i.e., of
meditation upon the Self, and realisation. Thus, in the last stage of the social order, viz., Sannyasa,
we have the highest spirit which embodies the soul’s upsurge from finitude to infinitude. This is the
natural and dynamic movement of every soul which strives to break all finite bonds and cast aside
all traces of attachment; and completely shattering the illusion of duality and phenomenal
existence, it strives to soar into the splendour of Atmic-Consciousness

CHARITY, GOODNESS AND GODLINESS

To pray for another is charity. To serve another is charity. To be kind and loving is charity. To forget and forgive some harm done to you is charity. A kind word said to a suffering man is charity. Generosity is the sister-virtue of charity. This body is meant for the good of others. Treat a deserving guest hospitably. First give to him and then eat for yourself. Supreme Goodness is God. Lead the life of goodness. To live in perfect goodness is to dissolve in the Infinite. Knowledge destroys ignorance. Real knowledge is the knowledge of God. All else is ignorance. Real spiritual life is based on goodness and godliness.

To realise this great end and aim, our ancient sages and saints have interwoven and blended
into the fabric of our social life the four Asramas, viz., Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha and
Sannyasa, to effect a gradual unfoldment of this spirit stage by stage in the life of an individual. In
the Brahmacharya Asrama, or the student-life, one has to live with his Guru, give up all distracting
thoughts and give himself up completely to the study of scriptures, living a life of self-control,
purity, simplicity, austerity, attention to studies and obedience to and service of the preceptor. In the
next stage, he lives an ideal life of a householder with selflessness, self-sacrifice and
self-effacement as his mottoes. This is the preparation for the next stage, viz., Vanaprastha, where
he has to discipline himself to enter the life of Sannyasa.

BASES OF MORAL LIFE

Abstain from injury by thought, word and deed. The ideal of life is purity, endurance, devotion, self-abnegation, self-restraint, renunciation and God-realization. Fasting destroys sins and purifies the heart. It is also a penance. Have steadiness of purpose. Be resolute. Be fiery in your determination. Have an iron will. As an iron rod that is in contact with the fire receives the properties of the fire, so also the man who meditates on the Lord and recites His Name attains the qualities of the Lord.

When it is the will of God that He must grace an individual soul in this Samsara in a special way, then He out of infinite compassion manifests in the life of that Jivatma as Mantra.

AVOIDANCE OF TRICKY WAYS

Do not take recourse to base tricks and mean craftiness. Be frank and straightforward. Obey the Laws and commandments of Scriptures implicitly. Selfishness, cheating, double-dealing, diplomacy, hypocrisy, and falsehood are the constant companions of greed. Do not claim equal position with your Preceptor, or teachers or elders. Be obedient to your father and mother. They are the visible representatives of God.

Practice of self-restraint, mental equipoise, truthfulness, compassion, purity, selflessness and meditation constitutes the process of Yoga.

Let us examine a few of the prophetic utterances of these great messengers of God. Is there
any religion that tells us “Utter lies; be dishonest; hate people; develop anger and animosity; be
impure; be immoral?” No, “certainly not”—is the emphatic answer. Every religion lays stress upon
a life of Truth, Absolute purity, of compassion, of love, of devotion, of tenderness, of a life of
sacrifice and of goodness in thought, word and deed. Every religion has given a way of life to its
followers as the ideal to be followed, in order to attain the goal viz., ultimate imperishable happiness
free from birth and death, disease and misery. The way or the means is one and the same in every
great religion. It is a life of purity and devotion practically demonstrated by each one of the
prophets, saints and great men of wisdom.

THE GENERAL. LAW

Truthfulness, contentment, self-restraint, non-stealing, purity, control of anger, discrimination between right and wrong, between real and unreal, spiritual knowledge, control of the senses—these come under the general or universal Law. The characteristics of the Law are the bestowing of gifts to deserving persons, fixing one's thoughts on the Lord, adoration of one's parents, and offering a portion of the daily meal to any creature. Established good custom is the general Law for all men. Forgiveness, truthfulness, control of mind, purity, practice of charity, control of the senses, non-violence, service of the Master, visit to the holy shrines, compassion, simplicity, absence of greed, worship of the Lord—are the essentials of all established customs or the general Law.

THE GLORY OF SANNYASA
We, as seekers of Truth, have first of all to bear in mind that there is a twofold aspect in
which Sannyasa pervades our life. In its purely spiritual aspect, Sannyasa embodies the highest
spirit of Nivritti, viz., the total negation of names and forms, and the masterful and purposeful
assertion of the One Reality, beyond all names and forms, that is Brahman or the Self. This is the
highest outcome of the highest Vedantic Sadhana. This is the innermost core of the culture of
Bharatavarsha, the highest and the only aim of human existence according to the Hindu genius. Not
only this physical universe, but the countless number of universes that exist as a drop in the infinite
ocean of Satchidananda are negated in order to ever remain immersed in the blissful consciousness

of the Atman.

Absolute Being is the highest perfection. Perfection is Bliss. The Self is the seat of Absolute Love, Love without an object outside it. It is Bliss without objectification, for Brahman-Bliss is not derived through contact of subject and object.

PRACTICE OF THE LAW

To violate the Law is sin. Where there is no Law, there is no happiness. Nothing can bring about harmony, universal peace, and prosperity except the Law. Founded upon the Law, politics and nation-building are assured prosperity, success, glory and growth. Based upon the Law, family life will be happy, useful and divine. Abandon not the Law at any cost, even at the risk of life.

Life is a gift bestowed upon man by God to be used to experience the infinite bliss that is not of this earth.

LIMBS OF THE LAW

God is the Centre of the Law. The Law is the eternal Divine Law of the Supreme Lord. The Scriptures are the only authority in the matter of the Law. That which is the Law is verily the Truth. Realize Truth by practising righteousness. Truth, compassion, austerity and charity are the four feet of the Law. The Path of the Law is extremely subtle and difficult of comprehension. Therefore, follow the teachings of the Scriptures and instructions of the elders, in a Judicious way. The Law includes all external deeds as well as thoughts and other mental functions which tend to elevate the character of a man. The Law is the basis of all austerity.

Good and bad, friend and enemy, pleasure and pain, virtue and sin are in the mind only.

No religion wants you to be tied down to this earthly life. All religions have as their goal the
attainment of perfection, freedom and immortality. All religions also have the same process in their
essence, whatever be the difference in the ritual or ceremonial details. Real Religion wants the
complete annihilation of the lower self, animalistic part of man, and the progressive unfoldment of
his divine nature. Thus from the very genesis, we see that the fundamental principle and the
ultimate goal of all religions are the same.

MEANING OF THE LAW

Swami Sivananda

That which elevates you and takes you nearer to God is right action, the Law. Righteous Living is the Law. The Law alone supports life. Actions performed in accordance with the injunctions of the Scriptures are right. That which leads you to the goal of life, the final emancipation, is the Law. The Law is that which upholds this world, the people of the world and the whole creation. The Law is the very regulation of life. That which brings you down and takes you away from God is wrong action or transgression of the Law. The actions done against the injunctions of the Scriptures are wrong. Transgression of the Law brings the destruction of its adherents and then suffers defeat at the hands of the Law. Transgression of Law cannot survive for a long time.

The process of religion slowly works out a scheme of life for you, where you are made to
bring into manifestation or into active expression all these lofty life-transforming elements of the
Divine aspect of your being, thus helping to overcome the animalistic aspect and progressively
unfold the divine nature that is already the essential part of your inmost Consciousness. Man is
made in the image of God; therefore Godliness is the very essence of his real inner being. Hence the
external operation of lower nature has to be overcome and cast away, thus giving full scope for the
manifestation of the Divine Svarupa (nature) in him. With the unfoldment and the blossoming of
the Divine Consciousness in man, he becomes at once linked with the infinite divine existence,
Sat-Chid-Ananda. The unity which had been for the time being veiled, as it were by ignorance is
re-established. This consummation of the religious quest is to make man declare: “I am not this
body, I am not the senses, the mind and the intellect, I am Sat-Chid-Ananda Brahman.” This comes
from the fullness of experience and the culmination of religious practice which is the experience of
your Eternal spiritual Unity with God-head.

Think truly. Speak truly Live truly. Act truly. Adaptability, kind speech, pure conduct and patience—these are the four fundamental virtues. You may possess all the virtues, but if you do not have humility, all that counts for nothing. Good nature, benevolence, truthfulness, and Justice are the foundation of character. Courage, forgiveness, control of mind, avoidance of misappropriation, purity of mind and body, sense-control, intelligence, learning, truthfulness and absence of anger are the characteristics of virtue and good conduct. Practise them constantly and assiduously. Mercy, truthfulness, cosmic love, purity, self-control, courage, tolerance, honesty, generosity, yearning for God-realization, serenity, and discrimination are the ingredients of good character. Do as you would be done by. This is the gist of ethics. Be good. Do good. This is right conduct. This is the essence of ethics and morality.

How can you get a sweet fruit from a Neem tree? Expectation of happiness from worldly objects is exactly similar to this. No happiness can be got from the world.

IMPORTANCE OF MORAL CHARACTER

Character is the essence of man. Out of righteousness springs wealth; out of righteousness springs happiness. Truth and justice alone triumph in the end, and injustice and falsehood perish. Kill the Law and you will kill yourself. Save the Law and you save yourself. Virtue is the key to blessedness. Vice is the gateway to hell and misery. Freedom from bondage is not possible without ethical perfection. That which is ethically good helps man to attain freedom, perfection and everlasting bliss. That which is ethically bad brings misery, suffering and lower birth to man. Thought determines character. Character is life's pillar. Man needs no more degrees but character, no more study but wisdom. He who has a blameless character and good behaviour can realize Truth quickly. Purification of the mind is an indispensable condition for attaining God-realization.

Prayer takes you to the domain of God. Prayer is the key to the abode of eternal bliss. Therefore, pray sincerely. Prayer is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening. Pray at least for five minutes daily when you get up and when you go to bed. Prayer is not asking for something material. It is the yearning of the soul for God.

The process of religion is the freeing of man from the factors which bind him down to this
earthly existence of pain and death. If unrighteousness is a factor in causing suffering, then be
righteous. If through untruth man is to be bound to this vexing mortal life, and has to pay a heavy
penalty in suffering and pain, then abandon falsehood; be truthful. If by being cruel, you will reap a
harvest of pain, torment and suffering, cast away cruelty and practise Ahimsa be good, be kind, be
compassionate. Thus the process of religion develops in a scientific way by studying the causative
factors of your bondage to this earth-life and its pains and sorrows. It insists that by living a life of
practical religion you can remove all these causative factors of suffering. We must, therefore, lead
the life carefully in such a way that we do not commit those things which result in painful
experience and existence.

MORALITY AND SPIRITUALITY

God looks to the motive of the doer. Science has to be supplemented by ethics and religion. Religious and moral instructions must be imparted in all schools and colleges. A life of pure thoughts and virtuous deeds will bring you nearer to God quickly. The practice of Truth and self-control leads to final emancipation. Where there are kindness, humility and purity, there spirituality springs up, saintliness shines, divinity descends and Perfection manifests itself.

RELIGION
Existence being one, all life is one. All life being essentially one, mankind is also one.
Uniformity is the law of the spiritual plane. Though externally, variety or diversity is the Law of
Nature in the manifest universe, in its inner aspect, uniformity or unity is the Fact of life. Mankind is
one. Thus on the one side we have this unity of mankind all over the universe. On the other side
regarding Godhead too we have utterances of sages ‘Ekam eva advitiyam Brahma’—God is one.
Absolute unity has to partake of the nature of oneness. Thus when we go into the fact of religion
from this observation and from this attitude or point of view, we are drawn to the conclusion that
Religion too is one! Whatever the apparent external differences between religions may be, the inner
process of religion has necessarily to be one and the same for it implies and comprises man’s

movement towards Godhead.

The permanency of a religion is based on its substantial foundation, which is dependent on its universality of outlook. The more universal we are, the more permanent we are.
