STEPS TO EMANCIPATION

Tanumanasi is making the mind as thin as a thread. Satwapatti is the acquisition of Sattwic mind. Asam-Shakti is non-attachment to the fruits of action. Padartha Bhavana is the perception of the Reality underlying everything. The sage beholds the Reality alone. All perception of objects, external and internal, is lost. This is the state called Padartha Bhavana. Tureeya is the fourth state in the ladder of realization wherein one rests in Brahman. The Vedanti says "Aham Brahma Asmi" or "I am the Reality. " Christ said "I and my Father are one. " Mansoor declared "'Anal Haq" or "I am That. " The Sufis affirm "Haq Manjud" or "Truth alone is. "

So, remember, cultivation of virtues is a fundamental part of self-culture leading to spiritual
evolution and Divine experience. This is the laying of the foundation as it were. If you want to
cultivate a garden from a wild piece of land, the first thing you have to do is to root out all the weeds,
the brambles, the undergrowth and remove all such unnecessary things. Then you have to prepare
the ground by removing all stones and pebbles and then make the soil fertile.
Thus, in this process of spiritual cultivation you must work at getting rid of the trash,
eliminating all that is undivine, unspiritual, transcending the brute and bestial nature such as greed,
hatred, anger, jealousy, selfishness, haughtiness and arrogance. Then you have to grow the flowers
of virtues in the garden of your heart. Then alone you will rise unto a state of godliness.
“Cleanliness is next to godliness.” One should have great deal of zeal in cultivating divine virtues.
Through the cultivation of virtues and removal of vices, the oscillating, tossing and restless nature
of the mind gets thinned out. Through prayer and meditation the veil of ignorance is torn aside. Now
you attain to the state of Reality-consciousness. Your experience is now one of absolute spiritual
bliss and peace. How can you now describe that grand experience of spiritual consciousness or
Divine ecstasy. You will only say, “I am Satchidananda.”

The "Advaita" of Sankara is not so much the assertion of oneness as the negation of duality, as the names of his system suggests. God is not one or two or three, for He is above numerical affirmation.

Artha and Kama are material values. They must be in consonance with Dharma. Dharma and Moksha are spiritual values. Moksha is the supreme aim of life(Paramapurushartha). That desire which arises in one to attain Self-realization through the path of Vairagya, or indifference to objects, after a study of Atma Jnana, Sastras and association with the sages or knowers of Brahman, is Subheccha or auspicious desire. Vicharana is the mastery of the good qualities of the wise and of contemplation on Atma with the rise of the spiritual desire to attain Self-realization. Subheccha is spiritual longing for emancipation. Vichara is enquiry into the nature of Atma, nature of bondage and liberation, nature of Maya, etc.

From time to time throughout the day, mentally offer yourself at the feet of God � �O Lord, I am Thine, all is Thine, whatever I do, all my acts, I offer at Thy feet.� Thus, everything becomes linked up with God and all activity becomes a Yogic process.

GLIMPSES OF TRUTH

Know the soundless Om, ever peaceful. In absolute peace alone the vibration of Om is felt. Om is Akshara Brahman. Vision of Truth is called Sakshatkara. Sakshatkara means 'face to faceness,' according to Advaitic aspect. The Infinite does not exclude the finite and yet there is no conceivable relation between the two. Manana is the process of Vichara or thought which removes the improbability of the Upanishadic statements. Nididhyasan is contemplation of the profound meaning of the scripture after all contradictory ideas are dispelled. Sravana, aided by Manana and Nldidhyasana, leads to the final intuition of Brahman.

Satsang removes the darkness of the heart, elevates the mind and fills it with purity. - Swami Sivananda The spiritual path demands a rigorous Tapas and heroic endurance at one time or other. This has been the common experience of all such earnest souls who, fired by the ideal of Self-realisation turn their back upon the world of vanity and folly. Self-evident truth does not need to be emphatically shouted or substantiated by long argumentation. The function of the great sentences of Mahavakyaa such as Tat Twnm Asi, Aham Brahma Asmi, is to awaken one from the slumber of ignorance. The great sentences have a deep but mysterious connection with what lies beyond. Om is the symbol of both Brahman and Ishwara (Niiguna and Saguna aspects of Reality). Without a symbol the finite mind cannot realize the Reality. The whole universe is a manifestation of Om. Pranava makes our life attuned to God. So it is called Pranava. Negate duality.

NOT A ROSY PATH
Nothing that is worthwhile is to be achieved without undergoing a corresponding amount of
pain and suffering. No enduring ideal can be attained without toil and sweat. The seed splits and
perishes to put forth the plant. The flower lays its life to give place to the sweet fruit. It is in the
furnace that gold emerges from the ore. Even so, the price of sainthood is to be paid in the interim

period of utter loneliness, privation and struggle which the aspiring soul passes through.

The quest for Brahman is the quest for completeness or perfection. Return to the source is called Repose. Repose is the law of Return. The law of Return is called Eternity. The Science of the Self is the acme of the Vedas. The highest good is the vision of Truth in every life. The best wealth is the knowledge of Atma. The best gain is Brahma Jnana.

Sadhana is a process of purifying and transforming your normal human nature into godly divine nature.

In the immaculate Jnana, all the differences of actor and enjoyer are lost but in the Ajnana-vision of people, these exist in concrete shapes. Brahma-Jnana is the release from the trammels of one's own mind. Such a release alone leads to the attainment of Moksha. The more you grow in the knowledge of the Self, the more you realize the futility of the knowledge obtained in the world. There is no reality other than Brahman. When this consciousness dawns in you all fluctuations and agitations will cease. Heal silence gives the bliss of the Eternal. Silence is Brahman. In real silence you forget yourself and the world. He is deluded indeed who knows not the Atma or the Reality. Negate all forms and objective experiences and assert, "I am Brahman or all-pervading pure, absolute Consciousness. " This is Vedantic Sadhana. 

Control the mind skillfully and tactfully. Think rightly and clearly. Discipline the organ of speech. Speak sweetly, gently and truthfully. Become a man of measured words.

The moment the positive opposite quality comes in, the negative quality vanishes; because
the negative quality has no basis. A negative quality is not an independent entity by itself. Mark this
very very carefully. Negative qualities really have no force. They only imply the absence of
positive qualities. He is a great liar means he has no truth in him. There are no such things as lies but
there is absence of truth in this person. The moment he welcomes truth by firmly asserting “I will
try to become truthful,” he can no longer be called a liar.
Hatred is not a positive quality. There is no such thing as hatred, some dark thing wanting to
jump upon you. It means that there is no love, no kindness. So it only indicates a condition of the
absence of love, and in one who cultivates love and compassion there is no more hatred. The
moment love comes in, hatred vanishes; because the positive is real and the negative is not real.
When the positive quality is cultivated, the negative ceases to be.

Jnana begins with intellectual dualism; the thinker trying to be one with the thought, or the meditator with the meditated, who finally attains union with Brahman. Jnana is director immediate experience of one's own inner Divinity. When there is true Jnana the knowledge of what ought to be done and the desire to do it will surely come, and proper activity will soon follow leading you to success. To read, to understand and to live up to the message of the Upaniahads and Gita is to follow the path of the Spirit or Jnana Yoga. The path of Jnana Yoga, despite its wonderful excellence, is suited to abstract intellects only. The common man is unfit for it. Mind needs the soap of wisdom to clean the dust of illusion

The sure and unfailing way of overcoming the negative qualities of the mind is just to concentrate your attention upon developing positive qualities. As they develop, the negative things just vanish.

Knowledge derived from the intellect is finite. Knowledge derived from intuition is infinite. Empirical Knowledge is brittle. It is not homogeneous. The worldly wise is not permanently happy. He who sees himself in all beings, by means of knowledge of Atma, attains spiritual unity with all, and realizes the eternal Brahman. It is the light of Atma Jnana that will enable you to see the Reality behind the manifest universe. There is neither defect not deficiency in the Absolute. Apart from the Absolute there is nothing anywhere that is eternally true. Knowledge of the Self is Light: you want Light, more Light. Lead kindly Light.

In the quest for material progress and sensual enjoyment do not lose sight of the goal.

Due to impurities, the mind is drawn always into a state of restlessness, outgoing movement
and agitation. This is the second barrier called Vikshepa. This has also to be overcome.
Still deeper in your mind is the third barrier called Avarana. It is a mysterious veil over the
inner depths of your consciousness which holds you in a state of ignorance of your higher nature.
Avarana is non-awareness owing to nescience, the basic ignorance. This veil is made up of the
identification of the body-mind-consciousness.
These three—Mala, Vikshepa and Avarana—have to be overcome gradually, stage by stage
in a methodical manner. And then suddenly you see the illumination of Atmic knowledge. You will
come face to face with your true nature. You will have this transcendental experience.
The removal of the basic impurities or blemishes can be done by the cultivation of the
opposite positive qualities. What do you do when you want to remove darkness? You do not bring
mops or brooms to sweep it or sacks to collect it. You bring the positive opposite quality light to
remove darkness.

STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Tureeyateeta or the state beyond the fourth state of consciousness is the state of the Videhamukta. The ultimate release or Vidaha mukti is achieved only when the body is finally cast off. Vichara, based on experiences, is the royal road to the wisdom of the Self. The real nature of Brahman-Jnana remains a mystery until one experiences it. It cannot be explained. To know what you are is real wisdom. To know your essential nature is real wisdom. Aspire ceaselessly and attain the wisdom of the Atma. The real knowledge is a matter of self-unfoldment and Self-realization.

This is an example of falling down from the beautiful state of your Atmic nature into the
ugliness and falsity of your lower nature owing to anger which is a kind of impurity (Mala).
Similarly also greed, passion, selfishness, arrogance, envy and jealousy etc., constitute the
impurities of human nature and every now and then they spring up and overpower the mind. The
Atmic consciousness is then obscured and pettiness, dishonesty, intolerance, pride and the thought
of “How dare one address me like this?” come into the mind.
These are all called impurities and are the basic blemishes of the human personality. These
blemishes constantly plague the human individual and need be eliminated if you are to rise into a
higher state of consciousness.
These impurities constantly put the mind into a state of agitation and activity. They never
allow the mind to be calm and serene. As long as these gross impurities draw the mind outward to
unspiritual action every moment, you cannot expect to sustain one unbroken current of thought of
the Supreme Reality.

It is not a dream for a worldly man. During dream all repressed desires try to crop up. Dreams are fulfilment of your desires and wishes which do not find expression in your daily life. In sleep there is neither conscious mind nor world; when awake, there is the conscious mind and there is the world. Sleep is not a state of non-existence or mere blankness. The knowledge in deep sleep is determinate. This is proved by a definite remembrance of experience in sleep, otherwise such knowledge as "I slept happily" is impossible in the waking state. Tureeya is the state of the Jeevanmukta, To be like God is your main mission in life. He has sent you to this earth so that you might shine like Him. - Swami Chidananda.
