THE FRUITS OF A RELIGIOUS LIFE

Religion is the foundation of society, the source of all goodness and happiness, the basis of the virtue and prosperity of the individual, and through the individuals, of the nation. Civilisation, order, morality-all that elevate man and give peace to the nation-are the fruits of the practice of religion. Take away religion. Man then lives to no purpose. He stays far away from the purposes of his birth. Life becomes a dreary waste here. There is no living without religion. It is only religion that makes existence valuable, and fills the mind with love, devotion, serenity and cheerfulness.

Therefore, in order to be able to propagate the Sadhu ideal, the ideal of divine quest, the
quest after Truth, I pray with folded hands that you should:
(1) Get all the books on the lives of saints, that you can and study them.
(2) Hold a Satsanga in your own house and narrate the lives of saints to your family and
children and friends.
(3) Save the money that you waste on luxuries and with that amount print and distribute
widely leaflets and pamphlets embodying the lives of saints.
Thus your own life will be transformed. Thus thinking constantly of saints, you will
yourself become a saint. And, you will help others transform their lives, too, and grow into saints.
This is the best and the most practical way in which you can promote the ideal of a Sadhu life.

A religious life is the greatest of all blessings. It lifts a man from the mire of worldliness, impurity, infidelity. Intellect is vain if it is not illuminated by religion. Religion does what philosophy can never do. If you live in accordance with the rules of religion, you will attain wisdom, immortality, everlasting peace, and eternal bliss. Religion frees one from sorrow and pain. Religion bestows everlasting peace. Religion makes one perfect and free. Religion makes one independent. Religion unites the soul with Brahman. Religion frees one from births and deaths.

Let not personal bias, force of convention, or the opinion of fanatics and sectarians blind your vision into a narrow view of religion. Do not be prejudiced by observing the religious practices of untutored masses. You must be able to differentiate the essentials from the non-essentials in religion and philosophy, through the power of pure reason and discrimination. Then only you can be happy. The essentials of all religions are one and the same. They all agree. Religions differ only in non-essentials.

: No samadhi is possible when hatred, prejudice, jealousy, anger, lust, etc. exist in the mind. Remove these defects by love, endurance, contemplation of the Infinite, vision of the Self, good company, and enquiry.

A Sadhu knows this very well. Sometimes, on account of previous Samskaras, the Sadhu
may deviate from the path just a bit, but he is never eternally lost. In the aspirant or seeker, there is
always the Viveka and Vichara alive. Therefore, the reaction of Nachiketas to the temptations of
Yama, is the reaction of a Sadhu to worldly pleasures.
The Sadhu, intent on treading the path of Sreyas (real good) tries to cut at the very root of the
cause of Preyas, the apparently pleasing, by means of prayer, Japa of the Lord’s Name, Sankirtan
etc. The hallmarks of all seers are more or less the same—compassion, selflessness, purity,
oneness, renunciation, tolerance, and above all, returning good for evil. There are many examples
from the lives of saints to illustrate this

Have a blessed day, THE ESSENTIALS OF RELIGION Swami Sivananda The essence of religion is not marks on the forehead, not the matted locks and long beard, not standing in hot sun and cold water, not the orange-coloured robe, not the shaven head, not ringing bells, not blowing the conch, not playing the cymbals, but a life of goodness, purity, and service in the midst of mundane temptations. Religion is living in God. It is not mere discussion about God. Mere intellectual assent cannot make you really religious. Real religion is beyond argument. It can only be lived, both inwardly and outwardly. It is realisation and becoming. Never enter into religious controversies. Religious controversies lead to hatred, quarrelling and separation. The only solution of world crisis is the revival of basic religion. Educate the religious sense. The key to social harmony lies in the purification of the mind of man. We can build the unity of all nations, fuse all factions, bring about human solidarity, only on the basis of our individual action in the spirit of the great phrase Tattwamasi. The existence of Yogins with superconsciousness, Gita, Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras, the teachings of saints and sages and the moral order of the universe, are a challenge to the Godless materialism.

 Negative thinking constricts the mind and invites negative conditions. To hold on to positive thoughts is the way of overcoming all that is negative.

The modern man must learn and understand the oneness of mankind. He must find the meaning of that oneness in his own Atma before he can help build the one world government. There must be proper understanding. The heart must be widened and freed from narrowness, selfishness, etc. Then alone brotherhood is possible. Unity of mankind, if it is to be real and enduring should be based upon the common factor of all beings, viz , Satchidananda Atma. Unity on no other basis will be fruitful. Behold and realize the oneness of mankind and the fundamental oneness of all religions. Behold the one light in the Christian Church, Hindu Temple, and the Muslim Mosque. 

Let your eyes look with kindness, your tongue speak with sweetness and your hands serve with softness. - Swami Sivananda There is an element of phenomena in Yoga, and undeniably, there are elements of mystical experiences too; but these are not what they have been built up to be. What are the bases and what are the explanations of these phenomena? What is the attitude of Masters towards these phenomena? These are points which are not only interesting to consider; these are also important for you, since you are all seekers, and at least one aspect of it all is something very personal to you. In the title of today’s lecture, the subject is not just “Occult Phenomena”, but “Occult Phenomena in Yoga”. An occult phenomenon, we are told, is anything that is hidden, not easy to observe, something secret or mystic. And today we are concerned with a reference to these phenomena as occurring in Yoga, to teachers and seekers on the path of Yoga, during the practice of Yoga. SPIRIT OF UNITY

One universal life flows through all beings. All creatures breathe the same breath of life. Behold the one in all. See the One universal life, the Atma. Behold the one Atma in all through discipline, meditation and realization. This alone will pave the way to unity, real understanding, universal brotherhood and Vedantic Communion. All life is interdependent. Therefore cultivation of good manners and judicious adjustment of mutual relationship are necessary. Merely eating and drinking on the same table, and intermarriage will not lead to universal brotherhood. The sense of unity is not produced by shaking hands, by taking tea from the same cup or by such other gross physical contact. This is not the idea of unity.

In what way shall we be able to propagate the Sadhu-life, the life of divine quest, and what
can we practically do in our own walk of life to awaken more and more people to the greatest
sublimity of this life of seeking after God? Sadhus form a class diametrically opposite to the
“normal man” of the world. If the man of the world holds a certain thing as desirable, the seeker
looks upon it as something more insignificant than dust. What is pleasurable to the worldly man is
extremely painful to the seeker. What the man of the world regards as necessary for life, the seeker
regards as the greatest obstacle to real progress. And, in the very conception of progress even, the
two are totally opposed to each other. If this is true, then the Sadhu must be a misfit in the world! To
some extent it is true. But the real Sadhu is not a total misfit. The Sadhus’ community forms only a
minority in the world. A Sadhu has got tremendous amount of adaptability. He knows that God
Himself is tolerating the world and so he is also prepared to tolerate the world.

The most elusive thing in this world is peace or happiness. The only true happiness is the bliss of the soul or Atma. Non-aggression and mutual co-operation pacts will lead to the attainment of lasting peace in the world. Democracy can be maintained only through peaceful means. There is need for cathol city and tolerance among the people of different faiths. Then alone there will be peace in the world. Blessed is the peace-maker who manufactures a life belt which will save humanity from being drowned in the choppy sea of confusion and strife. Work with determination. Strive resolutely for the establishment of peace on earth.

The best medicine or panacea for all diseases and for keeping good health is Kirtan, Japa and regular meditation. The Divine waves electrify, rejuvenate, vivify and energise the cells, tissues, nerves, etc.

These saints know that this worldly life is meaningless. The only meaning it has got is that it

can be taken as a field of Sadhana. What we think of the life of animals, the enlightened souls too
think the same of the life of an unprincipled man who leads a purposeless life.
You cannot get happiness from this work. If you go to a neem tree, pluck a fruit from one
branch and then eat it, you discover that it is bitter. Imagining that you made a mistake by choosing
to pluck from that particular branch which alone might be yielding bitter fruits exclusive of other
branches, you suddenly change to another branch, pluck a fruit from it and find that it is bitter too.
How can you get a sweet fruit from a neem tree? Expectation of pleasures from worldly
objects is exactly similar to this. No happiness can be got from the world.
A Sadhu knows this very well. Sometimes, on account of previous Samskaras, the Sadhu

JAPA

: When Japa of any Mantra is done with intensity, it sets up spiritual vibrations which transform the subconscious mind and make it strong enough to resist evil tendencies or Vasanas. Chant the name of the Lord. Sing His glory. Meditate on His divine attributes. He who repeats Lord's name with faith devotion and one-pointed mind, will conquer the mind in the end. God's name is like a lamp, kept on the doorway. It gives light both inside and outside the room. Even so, by keeping God's Name always on your tongue, you will have peace within and without. Just as fixe consumes the dross and releases pure gold from its impure one, so also does the Lord purify your heart, burn all the dross of your lower nature and release you as a pure soul.

If you want to co-operate with God, you must simultaneously learn to non-cooperate with your own mind.

Spiritual enlightenment is the fruit of the real, inner education. The supreme state of Blessedness or superconscious Samadhi is the culmination of all true education and culture. Samadhi is the soul's thought-free, natural state without limitation or separateness, a state of infinite and eternal bliss, wherein Brahman or the Absolute alone is known as the One Reality. In Samadhi there is the only feeling " Aham Asmi," " I am." There are no thoughts. There is no subject-object relationship. Samadhi is attained by bringing the senses, the mind and the breath under control, and then gradually withdrawing into Brahman or the Absolute. In the state of Samadhi one experiences the Atma which is full above, full below, full in the centre, full everywhere, because It alone is everything. \

Man can raise himself to the highest Heaven or damn himself to the lowest hell. It is all in his hands.

FRUITS OF SPIRITUAL EDUCATION

When Samadhi is being practised, obstacles forcibly make their appearance. Want of application, apathy, the longing for sensual enjoyment, inertness, stupor, perplexity, false dignity, sweating profusely, absent-mindedness, are the important obstacles to Samadhi. He whose mind is like the expansive sky and is devoid of all desires, who has known the Immortal Atma, is in a state of Samadhi or Nirvikalpa, superconsciousness. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi no individual consciousness remains either on the speculative or objective side, as the individual consciousness is merged in the universal consciousness. There is no consciousness of vibratory movement either. The universe is dissolved only in Nirvikalpa Samadhi or superconscious stale.

With all the strength, courage, heroism and other divine virtues, Hanuman of incomparable
humility possessed a heart which was ever melting in tears of Prem and which ever cherished the
attitude of servitude and humility. It is an object lesson for humanity both in its collective aspect, as
nations of the world, and in its individual aspect—how they ought to subserve their entire
capacities, abilities and strength to the service of the Lord, and how the strength and capacity should
be characterised by utter humility. That is the great important lesson that Hanuman’s personality
teaches to mankind for all times. If that is not there, we have the contrast of Ravana and we have the
inevitable fall.
Hanuman’s name has been immortalised became his infinite strength was accompanied by
immeasurable humility—humility as vast and deep as the ocean, and the perfect spirit of obedience
and service. Hanuman is ever the servant of Rama, with folded hands and utter surrender, ever
waiting for an opportunity to do some service to Lord Rama. He was a perfect devotee, a perfect
servant and Sevaka, and he was a perfect spiritual aspirant for he kept his ego always in subjugation.
Never do you find him raise his head, he always keeps it bent low. And therefore, Rama gave him
the foremost place. When the Pattabhisheka time came, Rama placed Hanuman in front of Him. It
was the reward of that perfect devotion, humility, spirit of service, absolute self-effacement and
self-absorption.

Yoga is the search for Truth in its ultimate reaches and above its relative utility. Adequate preparations have to be made for this adventure. We have to become honest before Truth, and not merely in the eyes of our friends.
