DISCRIMINATION
Swami Sivananda It is wisdom-eye-opener. It is a "secondary" intuitive eye of wisdom. It is a spiritual faculty that annihilates the clinging of the mind to earthly objects. Whenever the senses and the mind hiss and raise their hoods to get their objects, raise the rod of Viveka. They will become silent. Discrimination of the real means the determination that the nature of the Self or the Atman is eternal while all that is perceptible is unreal. This body, this mind, and this world, O aspirant, have no real being. The all-pervading, immortal Atman or Brahman alone really exists. Learn to discriminate, and become wise. You will be ever blissful.
So we must constantly try to see how God is trying to awaken us, in what way He is trying tohelp us unfold our higher nature. Then life will be very interesting. It will have something to tell usevery moment. Suddenly, difficulties may assume a new light. Rather than being something to beannoyed at, or avoided, they may be a challenge, a warning or a helping hand. They may besomething to invoke in us a higher virtue.

What 'happens' is done by God. What is 'initiated' is done by the Jiva. We should be able to distinguish between what happens without our interference and what is done with it.
