A sweet smile, a little kindness, a little courtesy, a little feeling
for others practised all the time, will give great charm to your
character. A person who is courteous has fine and polished manners.
Courtesy charms at first sight and leads a person to intimacy and
friendship. It wins many friends.

This is to be deeply reflected upon. The crucial, central thing in the
spiritual life, in the life of the spiritual seeker and his coming
into relationship with a guru is one’s desire to get rid of oneself,
the desire to transcend oneself. That should be there. There should be
a keen grasp of the essence of the spiritual process, be it Vedanta or
raja yoga or bhakti yoga or karma yoga. One should have a deep,
correct understanding. Gurudev himself was an outstanding example of
this sadhana of the annihilation of the ego.
