THE HARVEST OF A CONTROLLED DESIRE
Swami Sivananda
When you give up an old habit of drinking coffee, you have controlled
to a certain extent the sense of taste, destroyed one Vasana, and have
eliminated the craving for it. As there is freedom from the efforts to
procure coffee and also from the habit of taking it, you will gain
some peace. The energy involved in the hankering for coffee, and which
was agitating you, will now be converted into the power of will. By
this conquest over, you gain will-power; and if you conquer some
fifteen such desires, your will-power will fifteen times be stronger
and more powerful. And this conquest, by imparting strength to the
will, will help you conquer other desires, too.
With that one urge from withinóa spontaneous urge not arising out of
mind, intellect,
thought, feeling, emotion or sentiment, because they are established
in a state totally beyond,
transcending, all theseóthere is a spontaneous intention of supreme
love and goodwill that all may
be established in the great state that they have attained by the grace
of the Supreme. That is the only
intention with which they act.

Personal needs, social laws and political systems of administration
cannot be separated from the requisitions necessitated by the very
nature of the final unity of all things.
